Re: Can you confirm the Jewish view of our elevation in Eden
Nasty Bishop: I don't see the connection between Original Sin and your so-called elevation. There is no doubt that the incident was a sin of cosmic significance. You didn't mention the actual verse you discuss - Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said: 'Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know goo...

Re: Interpretation of the flood account in Genesis
The flood is clearly a global event. Arnoldo has argued that the Hebrew eretz can mean either land (like my farm) or earth. However the meaning is made clear in the context. If the flood is meant to be local why does Noah take animals with him גַּ֣ם מֵע֧וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם שִׁבְעָ֥ה שִׁבְעָ֖ה זָכָ֣ר וּ...

Re: how does yhwh save?
I'm still sort of guessing on the question that is being asked in this thread. There is a thread at FRDB on Is Atheism Irrational? - http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/09/is-atheism-irrational/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_php=true&_type=blogs&pagewanted=all&_r=1 Think about ...

Re: What is the Biblia Hebraica exactly?
[wiki]Biblia_Hebraica_(Kittel)[/wiki] Looks like wiki link is not working... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblia_Hebraica_(Kittel) Biblia Hebraica refers almost exclusively to the three editions of the Hebrew Bible edited by Rudolf Kittel Their main feature was their footnotes recording possible cor...

Re: how does yhwh save?
The proposition in the OP is incoherent, but allowing for the writer's grammatical difficulties, it is also unsound. This would be similar to asserting that Stephen Hawking was more intelligent than Aristotle because Aristotle didn't know about black holes. Jewish theological thought changed over ti...

Re: how does yhwh save?
The word "save" is יְשׁוּעָה Yeshua, as in Joshua, Jesus, Yoshke (my favorite). Strong's 3444a something saved, i.e. (abstr.) deliverance; hence aid, victory, prosperity:--deliverance, health, help (-ing), salvation, save, saving (health), welfare. I wait for Your deliverance, O LORD! (Gen...

Re: 50 people in the Hebrew Bible also in archaeology
I discussed the historical kings of Judah and Israel in a recent FRDB King David thread. I think four are mentioned from Judah and one or two more than four from Israel. There is also a List_of_biblical_figures_identified_in_extra-biblical_sources I haven't seen much academic opinion on this, but it...

Re: Genesis errs on domesticated camels
Actually we know that the Pentateuch was written no earlier than the 10th century BCE and more probably after the 6th. So whether the Patriarchs had camels or not is not all that important. However, they almost certainly did not have camels. The press, of course, doesn't go into a lot of details. ht...

Re: Genesis errs on domesticated camels
This is not an easy debating point. If you google camels anachronism you get a selection of fundamentalist views. Were camels domesticated in the time of Abraham? - http://bibleapologetics.wordpress.com/2011/04/24/were-camels-domesticated-in-the-time-of-abraham/ It is recognized domesticated camel c...

Re: Genesis errs on domesticated camels
There is also a thread in FRDB on this. The Camel - Dromedaries may have first been domesticated by humans in Somalia and southern Arabia, around 3,000 BC, the Bactrian in central Asia around 2,500 BC,[14][62][63][64] as at Shar-i Sokhta (also known as the Burnt City), Iran.[65] In accord with patri...
