Re: The Torah ordained through angels

In Galatians 3:19 Paul says the Law was given through angels and trusted through a mediator. The mediator I guess is Moses. Who are the angels? Do you think these could be the archons of the lower celestial realms? The rulers of this material world? I don't see it personally, based on what I've rea...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?

Epiphanius never says "after 70 CE". This is just rank traditionalism. He only says the Ebionites came after the Nazarenes. Epiphanius says that Ebion came after the Nazoraeans, whom had moved to Cocabe shortly before Jerusalem fell. The Ebionites' 'origin came after the fall of Jerusalem...

Re: Divine madness

I think there are interesting parallels between the spread of early Christianity and the Second Great Awakening in the 19th Century. According to Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Great_Awakening The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant religious revival during the early 19th century in ...

Re: Flaw with Marcion priority theory?

Marcion theory has first gospel c. 140 CE when Marcion put together his *ev. I don't think that's correct. Marcion appears to be claiming that his Gospel was first, and it is the proto-orthodox Christians who updated things. According to Tertullian: https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/tertu...

Yes, *Ev seems to have become nomina sacra, for some. But we can't be 100% sure that, when written out, it is "Evangelicon". It might be "Evangelikon". Or even "Marcion wrote the first gospel b*tches!"

Re: Was Josephus a Christian?

I'm curious, is there anything to suggest that Josephus expected that there would be the Davidic Messiah who was still to come? I think there are hints of it, yes. In his Antiquities of the Jews: Book 7, Chapter 2: 2. When these things were brought to this conclusion, all the principal men of the H...

Re: Was Josephus a Christian?

Looking over what you've written, I don't disagree with much of it, other than the idea of how much this was a part of Flavian propaganda (if I am reading your points correctly). So: yes, Josephus didn't see Vespasian as the Messiah ; What do you mean by that? By that I mean the Davidic Messiah who...

Re: Was Josephus a Christian?

But what do you think about what Ken wrote and and about what I wrote here? I agree with Ken's point earlier in this thread: "We do not need to doubt that the Jews who took the oracle found in their sacred writings to refer to themselves had in mind a Messianic and probably eschatological read...

Re: Was Josephus a Christian?

And while I don't think Josephus was a Christian, I think Christians were a faction of the Fourth Philosophy, and in that respect I view Josephus and Christians as being sympatico. They were both, in their respective ways, expecting a "governor of the habitable earth" to arise "about...
