Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

Congratulations to Russell Gmirkin - someone posted a link to a press release in r/books and it went viral generating over 2500 responses. There's even a few posts asking for an AMA https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/53ywic/new_book_claims_the_old_testament_drew/?limit=500 I found this while do...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

But notice that the very first law from the Cot7 is "Follow God" which is singular. Perhaps they meant a supreme God like Zeus? And the plural gods in #3 pertains to minor gods - as would have also been in the Ugartic pantheon? http://www.bibleinterp.com/articles/MSmith_BiblicalMonotheism....

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

Russel Gmirkin, thanks for popping in. If I had a question it would be... Would a Diglossia have been probable in Alexandria around this time? If so, does it make any plausibility for the Greek/Hebrew versions to have been written at the same time? For anyone, here's a direct link to Gmirkin's page ...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

To extend the question of a Diglossia, if at the height of the Roman Empire you'd have areas where Koine Greek was normally spoken everyday, but Latin was spoken in politics and higher education, would there have been a similar diglossia of Greek and Hebrew in Alexandria circa 270BC when these would...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

Would the concept of a Diglossia be applicable to this situation? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diglossia ( Diglossia) refers to a situation in which two dialects or languages are used by a single language community. In addition to the community's everyday or vernacular language variety (labelled &q...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

Andrew, thanks for pointing that out. It seemed like a good review at first, but after looking at her website, maybe it's better to just post the link and not the text, and leave it at that. DCHindley wrote: the Judeans had made a conscious effort to recast their national ancestry and history, or ev...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

Oh heck, here's a cut & paste of the most recent review of Gmirkins Berossus & Manetho book dated 10/2015 linked above. It's by Laura Knight-Jadczyk and it's somewhat thorough. She even takes the position that it may have been written in Greek first THEN translated to Hebrew: 1st edit: (Refe...

Re: Plato and the Creation of the Hebrew Bible

There was never any discussion thread here specifically dedicated to Gmirkin's 2006 book (Berossus and Genesis, Exodus and Manetho) so hopefully this sequel generates more discussion. I'll just humbly put up a post of relevant links here at least as a placeholder. Here's the Amazon link which includ...

Re: Placing Matt-> Mark enhanced "4 attestations" argument?

At church, you will always be served easily digestible snippets. Yea, the congregants only get bite sized snippets, whereas on the other end of the spectrum, Bible scholars are well aware of all the details of the Gospels. But what about those with a mid-level of Bible education (above the congrega...

Placing Matt-> Mark enhanced "4 attestations" argument?

This is not to discuss whatever may be the main reason as to why Matt was placed before Mark in the canonical gospels. However, a secondary advantage of having the order this way seems to have enhanced many evangelists argument that a historical Jesus existed because "we have 4 independent atte...
