Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

I think we might expect that the scribe might not use the same ligature found in ἐκλεγόμενος, χρησάμενος, and περιβεβλημένος because they are unaccented and he wanted to represent the accent. Great observation. Have you proposed an explanation why Μάρκος has no -ος ligature and νεανίσκος does? I al...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

Because of which characters are represented in ligature form (ος) and which are not, we can discard the suggestions that the ligature used in the text is -μενος or "-νος," and we can understand Tselikas more correctly as organizing different illustrative examples alphabetically that he de...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

Have you ever tried learning calligraphy with a dip pen? No, I haven't. 6. I need to get better at not jumping to conclusions..... :-( I was hoping that we could use some image processing techniques to disambiguate this gymnastic blob--but we just don't have to data to resolve this issue via lookin...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

Other arguments are that I think there is a slight indentation as Ken Olson said Take a look at Smith's Black and white photoes--the indentation is not apparent. Also, zoom in on the HIGH RES unprocessed gymnastic character--you'll see that where the "indentation" is is very much lighter ...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

I was inspired by Peter Kirby's set of iotas and did a set for sigmas. These are not all sigmas but only those that I find somewhat similar to the gymnastic character (40 = III.13 γυµνὸς/γυµνοὶ): sigmas.jpg 1 = I.1 Κλήµεντος 2 = I.5 εἰς 3 = I.12 παντελῶς 4 = I.16 πράξεις 5 = I.18 πίστεως 6 = I.19 εἰ...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

For the purpose of apples-to-apples comparison, I have sent you a Google drive link with the (circa 300MB each) bitmap files of all three pages. I have additionally sent the same invitation link to Ken Olson, Andrew Criddle, and Adam Kvanta. Thanks, much appreciated! Tselikas performed a detailed s...

Re: Who's death Jos. blamed for city's destruction

There is a relation to the NT: Matthew 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias , whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Interesting post. Btw, I saw this on Wikipedia : The Gospel...

Re: Comments on Handwriting Analysis and the Mar Saba Letter

I may be misunderstanding Tselikas but IIUC although in the word τοῦ the omicron and the upsilon are written as ligature and apparently continuous with the circumflex, the stroke is done in the wrong direction. Right to left not left to right. (This is how I understand the passage from Tselikas ῦ w...

Re: 1715 Clement edition

Though he knew of the movement of many materials to Jerusalem. Thanks for correcting me, I was presuming wrongly. There was indeed a transfer of manuscripts from Mar Saba to Jerusalem in 1865. Morton Smith wrote: The manuscripts of Mar Saba proved, on examination, to be mostly modern. This was no s...
