Re: The Lost Roman Herb

Asafoetida is one of my favorite spices to cook with. I had a small tub of asaphœtida once-upon-a-time, but since the herb/spice appeared in Indian recipes in amongst many spices, it never seemed essential, and I never used it. Interesting that it can be used entirely on its own. I hadn't considere...

Why the 17 Exodus and the 20 numbers are very similar?
Presumably you mean the two stories of Moses getting water from the rock?

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

Jacob and Beth-El is an interesting point - not to mention other parts of the Jacob saga. However, I see Jacob as a unified story and am not convinced that each vignette/pericope shows a separate literary layer. Well I'm not convinced of that either. But one of the theories that has somewhat dislod...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

Why J couldn't have been written after 722 BCE is anyone's guess - which sort of demonstrates how unlevel the playing field is. I agree with you entirely. The United Monarchy is pretty much a dead duck, let along the dating of any significant literary activity to that time. Regarding my opinion, th...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

The point of the Elohist is that the guy was from the north before the Assyrians took over. I suppose that could have happened, and it probably is much more likely than space aliens writing the stuff, but it just doesn't seem like a serious view anymore except in a synagogue. What makes you say tha...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

However, be aware that I don't treat anything I just said as gospel. These are just interesting possibilities. That's good to hear. It's a rare pleasure to engage in open-ended discussion rather than tussle with defend-to-the-death certainty. I'm interested in reading Konrad Schmid's view and saw a...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

The aforementioned Konrad Schmid has definitely done away with it, and most of his colleagues agree. They consider the "Jahwist" to be a disparate collection of older stories, a collection that never told a comprehensive tale. I haven't read any substantial work by Konrad Schmidt. How similar is hi...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

I didn't expect my comment to be interpreted as suggesting he "unreasonably ignored" anyone. That's certainly not what I meant. His chapter gives no indication that the DH itself is on the way out or under challenge. I do know of a couple of scholars who dispute it so I thought this chapter was int...
