Re: How the Story of Jacob was Created

Probably Joseph will be chapter 5 here, but there is an interesting parallel with Rachel stealing the Teraphim and Joseph framing Benjamin in Egypt with the wine cup he used for divination (Genesis 44). It is the very one from which my master drinks and which he uses for divination. It was a wicked ...

Re: Was there a Jewish temple in ancient Egypt?

I don't think there was a Jewish temple in Alexandria. Only a grand synagogue. That makes sense and may help explain the elusive oddity of this thread. The Alexandria Basilica Synagogue Destroyed by Hadrian 280 BC - 117 AD http://www.bible.ca/synagogues/Alexandria-Great-Basilica-Colonnaded-Egypt-an...

Re: "baramin" - bad grammar in Hebrew

Always nice to look at the one part of the bible everyone knows. ‎בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ ׃ (Gen. 1:1 WTT) When God began to create heaven and earth (Gen. 1:1 TNK) IN THE beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Gen. 1:1 JPS) Personally, it is one of...

Re: 2600-year-old seal

Rollston makes an interesting point about mlk meaning God as opposed to king.

He also mentions names like Nathanyahu - YHWH has given.

Could be just two different families who had slightly different, but innocent, names for the big guy

Or MLK could be Moloch

Re: Was there a Jewish temple in ancient Egypt?

There were two, actually. The one on Elephantine Island, which dates to Persian times, and a second "anti-temple" in Heliopolis, Egypt, built by the son of the HP Onias, probably not too long after 164 BCE. That article you linked to seems to have a weird agenda to it. DCH I noticed that too. The a...

Re: 2600-year-old seal

Thanks for the link Stephen. Ketef_Hinnom In 1979, two tiny silver scrolls, inscribed with portions of the well-known Priestly Blessing from the Book of Numbers and apparently once used as amulets, were found in one of the burial chambers. Apotropaic nature of the amulets Jeremy Smoak has argued tha...

Re: Women of the Wall

As secular Jews, we should respect those who meticulously follow the commandments - this is a window into how are forebears lived and thought - of course, for a convert, not so much. Note that the quote mentions that only after the Haskalah were Jews free to even have a conversation about different...

Re: Women of the Wall

According to Jewish tradition, the Oral Torah was passed down orally in an unbroken chain from generation to generation until its contents were finally committed to writing following the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, when Jewish civilization was faced with an existential threat.[1][cla...

Re: Women of the Wall

I don't understand what your goal is in these posts. Anyone can go to the Kotel and pray. The point of this thread is to lament the treatment of and violence against non-Orthodox Jews praying at the Wall. Sure, "Anyone can go to the Kotel and pray," but why can't non-Orthodox Jews pray there howeve...
