Re: Sacrifices without a temple and the date of pseudo-Philo (for John2).

A few years ago, archaeologists unearthed a massive dump on the outskirts of the old walled city of Jerusalem. Dating revealed the dump was used between the start of King Herod's reign in 37 B.C. and the Great Revolt in A.D. 66. A massive dump that was used for 30 years? Funny they haven't found a ...

Re: Sacrifices without a temple and the date of pseudo-Philo (for John2).

The Sages were in between a rock and a hard place with the temple and Xianity. They couldn't very well say sacrifices were stupid without acknowledging some kind of debt to the Xians. They came up with a coming messiah, as absurd as that concept is, and the third temple idiocy. At least Judaism surv...

Re: Sacrifices without a temple and the date of pseudo-Philo (for John2).

And just so you know, this is all the time and energy I'm going to give you, Ethan. I find your way of thinking very peculiar and will leave you to it. Almost makes me want to read the posts. No doubt we are all a little peculiar here. I'm not really a temple slut (so my knowledge is not all that d...

Re: Sacrifices without a temple and the date of pseudo-Philo (for John2).

It takes a lot of work to shlepp an animal to the temple mount and then you have to get it from there to whoever is going to eat it. That would have been an extremely disagreeable project for no clear religious benefit. People have done crazier things but my guess is that if there is any doubt about...

They have the right to act like imbeciles, you seem to be implying that imbeciles don't have any rights.

Re: Ancient Judaism was not Exclusive

Coming so close to Yom Kippur, this negative information dump recalls the story of the Ten_Martyrs In the story,[1] the Roman emperor Hadrian decides to martyr ten rabbis as 'punishment' for the ten brothers listed in the Torah who sold their brother Joseph to Ancient Egypt.[2] He justifies this by ...

Re: Ancient Judaism was not Exclusive

Sands is more or less correct.

My take on this matter, is that from a marketing point of view, the Christian product was clearly superior.

To ensure survivability, the sages decided to make membership in the brotherhood exclusive.

Thanks Ben,

We can probably all agree that if the Jews who brought sacrifices before the destruction were morons, the ones who did it afterwards were imbeciles.

Re: Yahwist’s Parallel Formation Techniques

Bibleworks is/was a superb product. Really no other choice for a Jew. ... I'm embarrassed to admit that I know nothing of Bibleworks. Was it comparable to Sefaria ? I've had Bibleworks for over 15 years and don't know much about other products other than what I read online. I first started using Bi...

Re: Yahwist’s Parallel Formation Techniques

I am glad you pointed the Tamar joke and parallel out. Definitely it is a blend of Joseph's robe stories and Tamar pericope. It is too bad that there has been limited discussion of Aggadah here lately. There always used to be a few believers (whatever that means) around also to keep things amusing....
