The No other Version argument

Years ago I made this argument on sec web and peter Kirby and i argued it. I have a super long answer to him on Doxa But I thin after all these years it would be more interesting to argue it with him again. I don't think this proves Jesus existed but I think it is a good addition to the evidence. I ...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

... you have made up your own standard of history that real historians do not use. What 'standard of history' do "real historians" use :?: historians accept Festus mentioned in Paul's letter based upon mention in acts and name on a wall. They accept Pilate with only a couple of mentions, ...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

Perhaps one should note that Roman money is a theme in Mark to discuss the question: What is something worth? Imho Mark mentions Roman money often in a negative sense (Mark 6:37, 12:15, 12:42, 14:5). It seems to me that Mark's goal in 12:42 was not to explain the 2 Lepta to “his” Roman audience. I ...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

● Then there's the give unto Caesar denarii that Jesus calls for, even though denarii weren't used in Judea, now were Greek coins (leptas) two of which were equivalent to one Roman quadrans (in the widow's mitres story). We get clever dudes suggesting that they got Roman and Greek coins from soldie...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

I ask because I sometimes think of history as being a bit like real life. How often do any of us believe anything solely because of the story we hear about it? I'm not quite sure how everyone is using this word "story." We might want to be more specific about our terminology to avoid conf...

Re: Jesus' appearances to Peter and James

Sometimes I would just love to go in a time machine to see what the real story was with the gospels. In fact, I would be interested just to know how the early Christians portrayed some simple, easy things, particularly: 1. What was Jesus' appearance to Peter about? Where did it happen? According to...

Re: Whatever happened to Earl Doherty?

Thinking of mythicists of a couple of decades ago - I must be getting old! - I realised that it is a long time since I heard anything of Earl Doherty. I remember his "Jesus Puzzle"; and that seemed to be that. Does anyone read his stuff any more? Whatever happened to him? JW : Thinking of...

Re: Ideological armor

There is an interesting difference between Greek mythology, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. A difference that is likely much broader. In Greek mythology, nobody warns against worshipping other deities or believing in false belief systems, though it does warn against being disrespectful to...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

I know I'm going to regret entering this little discussion but here goes -- a question for starters: Who are some persons universally accepted as genuinely historical on the basis of "stories alone"? First of all when you call something a "story" that's a loaded term. It could b...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

The rest of that OP is somewhat negative eg. - History is probability. Although a strange kind of probability to which we cannot put numbers. 1 or the question before us is "when does it become reasonable to doubt?" Good history (ie. good historical methodology) is nuanced, contextual, an...
