God versus Gods: THE BOOK

I just released my new book, G-d Versus Gods: Judaism in the Age of Idolatry (Mosaica Press, 2018). My book details the history of the struggle between idolatry/polytheism and Jewish Monotheism in Biblical times. It is broken up into two sections: The first section follows the narrative of the Bible...

Re: Where was the Temple of Onias located?

Alexandria in the Babylonian Talmud sometimes seems to mean Egypt in general. Andrew Criddle Do you have any sources for this assertion? Mishnah Menachot 13.10 http://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Menachot.13?lang=en “I take upon myself an olah” - he must offer it in the Temple. And if he offered it in t...

However, the truth is that the actual text of the Stele ([rendered in Hebrew characters][2]) reads: אנך משע בן כמש** מלך מאב הדיבני. The stars are apparently unreadab...

Why is Matgenus, king of Tyre, sometimes called Mattan?

In Josephus' Against Apion (1:18) he writes in the name of Menander the Ephesian that Matgenus was one of the Tyrian kings, but I have seen other sources (like Wikipedia, et al.) refer to this king as Mattan. Why is he sometimes called Matgenus and sometimes called Mattan? Who decided that Matgenus ...

Re: What is the temple of Arza? Which idol is this?

I find that your question is adequately answered here: http://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/21105/what-is-the-temple-of-arza-which-idol-is-this As I commented there, my question is specifically to understand the explanation of Targum and the Peshitta who DO explain that Arza is an idol, ...
