Re: Ehrman's Adoptionist Theory and Christ Mythicism

The strength of the HJ argument is that it at least has some direct evidence, unlike MJ. The strength of the MJ argument is just the weakness of the HJ argument. Both sides should concentrate on the evidence and not the conclusions. HJ largely ignores/denies proper consideration of witness evidence...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

As GDon continues to contrive ways to make this a confusing issue, it might help to consider this passage from the LXX Zec 2:10 - 13 10 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Sion: for, behold, I come, and will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. 11 And many nations shall flee for refuge to the ...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

ah, ok Ben. I agree that Carrier has been 'economical' with scholarly explanation. MrMacSon: I have long since decided that nitpicking on this site is not worth the aggravation. Carrier was clear enough in OHJ and has made this point abundantly clear again in his reply to Giuseppe. "Secret Ali...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

PS. I will kindly ignore Josephus as evidence of anything. Even though that passage is of dubious significance it is, however, a somewhat interesting alignment. If you say so, :) . It means nothing to me, besides Josephus is a rotten witness of his time. Arnaldo Momigliano writes : “It is our task ...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

Interesting, this Christian website seems to mimic the mindset Carrier is suggesting Philo and other 'pre-Christian' thinkers had (my last post referred to Ezra 5:1-2 which clearly identifies Jesus, son of Josedek as the rebuilder of the Temple after Babylon captivity). IOW Jesus is name of the Bra...

Re: The Jesus Wars Go Thermonuclear

You seek to discredit [Carrier's] thesis by discrediting him. Not so. I disagree with his thesis that Paul believed Jesus was crucified in outer-space for the reasons stated. I have lost respect for him as a person not because of his reading of Paul, but due to the way he handles himself when confr...

Re: My review of Richard Carrier's "On the Historicity of Je

Richard Carrier has responded to my second question. I've quoted it below (my bolding): http://freethoughtblogs.com/carrier/archives/8161#comments You don’t seem to understand how words originate. People mean euhemerizing is historicizing because that is the only distinctive thing Euhemerus did. Th...

Re: Is the Rejection of Jewish Origin for Xristianity = Lazi

To this end, I have to wonder again, how can there be any doubt that Jesus = Ishu. It's not just the second century Church Fathers, it's not just Marcion but even the very earliest heretics (= Simon Magus) and the earliest reports about the Christian heretics (= minim) all say that Jesus was the se...

Re: Carrier's numbers and math in OHJ

That is a major question for me in how Carrier uses Bayes. For example, for the prior probability, Carrier uses the Rank-Raglan scale, and comes up with 1:15 odds as worst case for historicity. Assuming for argument's sake that Carrier is correct. But he uses it later in his Bayes to give odds of 1...
