Re: Shapira NOT a Forgery

Idan Dershowitz and Na'ama Pat-El have responded to Benjamin Suchard's paper: https://www.academia.edu/47094146/Response_to_Benjamin_Suchard_The_Valediction_of_Moses_is_not_a_proto_Deuteronomy_evidence_from_the_verbal_system_ B. Suchard has given some preliminary rebuttal to the rebuttal, pending a ...

Re: Having It Both Ways With Secret Mark

Page 188 includes: A late tradition associates St. Mark with the foundation of the Church of Alexandria; whatever may lie behind this legend, there are certainly grounds for thinking that the origins possibly, the associations certainly, of the Alexandrian Church were western rather than eastern, [n...

If you don’t have access to the 1955 offprint/reprint of Roberts, The Codex, maybe try Proceedings of the British Academy vol. 40, 1954, pages 169-204.

Re: Essenes called "Samaritans" ? "Samaritans" in Egypt

A possible mistake Epiphanius made was in thinking Essenes (his heresy 10) and Ossenes (his heresy 19) were two separate groups. The Essenes he listed as a Samaritan subset, but the Ossenes he listed--more correctly imo--as a Jewish subset.

Re: Essenes called "Samaritans" ? "Samaritans" in Egypt

A potential source of associating Samaritans and Essenes is taking the former to mean keepers of Torah (even if that is a folk etymology) and the latter as observers (doers) of Torah (which I have argued* is the etymology). * http://people.duke.edu/~goranson/Essenes_&_Others.pdf especially pages 537...

Further discussion: Benjamin D. Suchard. The "Valediction of Moses" is not a proto-Deuteronomy: evidence from the verbal system. A five-page paper and then discussion at academia.edu https://www.academia.edu/46783534/The_Valediction_of_Moses_is_not_a_proto_Deuteronomy_evidence_from_the_verbal_system...

Re: Shapira NOT a Forgery

Though I agree with almost everything Christopher Rollston wrote, that the Shapira strips apparently burned in a particular house fire, as was once thought, turned out not to be the case. As Matthew Hamilton of Australia showed, the pieces were sold (for a small amount) to Philip Brookes Mason, who ...

Re: Revisiting Philo's Therapeutae and their Context/Timeline

For a proposed dating of De Vita Contemplativa to the 40s CE, if I may copy a 2018 comment: A new (2018) book, Philo of Alexandria: An Intellectual Biography, by Maren R. Niehoff, proposes that he had a change in philosophy after his mission to Rome. A review is here: http://bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2018/2...
