Re: The Ebionites, locusts, & wafers in oil.

I agree there's nothing in this passage that leads to priority one way or the other as far as 'vegetarianism' is concerned, but which version is closer (or) to the original? Not sure. So many changes like this just do not scream one direction or another. Adding a scriptural reference (to manna, in ...

The Ebionites, locusts, & wafers in oil.

Concerning the Ebionite Gospel: Epiphanius, Panarion 30.13.4-5: 4 And, “John came baptizing, and there went out unto him Pharisees and were baptized, and all Jerusalem. And John had a garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of skin about his loins. And his food,” it says, “was wild honey, whose taste ...

Re: The kingdom of the heavens (for Martijn Linssen).

Your last paragraph is, errr, how do I put it... quite astonishing? It seems to be supposing that Matthew has heard "kingdom of the heavens" out of the mouth of Jesus? No, nothing like that. If I read it correctly, you suggest that Matthew is using an original, and that the Greek translat...

The kingdom of the heavens (for Martijn Linssen).

Subject: Hebrew heavens turn into Greek heaven Where the hell (pun!) did Matthew get his kingdom of the heavens from? He is the only one in the entire NT who speaks of a kingdom of heaven(s) , and it's not in the LXX either (or the MT) Is it in the DSS, perhaps? That would be very, very interesting...

Re: Hebrew heavens turn into Greek heaven

I think the MT has precedence.... Why would the MT have precedence over the Dead Sea scrolls? Same language, and the scrolls predate the Masoretic scribes by centuries . The date can't be contested - the question is which is the more authorative version. Should we toss all versions of the Tanakh an...

Re: 1 Cor 15:3-11 once again

Your explanation requires that information about the visions granted to others fall into the category of, as you put it, "ordinary information," which to my eye contradicts the statement in 1 Corinthians 15.3 that the listed information was "of first importance." This reminds me...

Re: The other rich man.

Greek (formatted from the TLG) ≈ Origen, Commentary on Matthew 15.14 (Matthew 19.16-30) English (formatted and slightly modified from Justin M. Gohl if drawn from the Greek; a combination of my own translation and that of Klijn if drawn from the Latin) Latin (formatted from Migne) ≈ pseudo-Origen, ...

Re: The other rich man.

Just a suggestion, but have you looked at the possibility that Pseudo-Origen might be referring to the Rich Man in the Gospel of the Hebrews as "another rich man" in relation to some Rich Man he has discussed in his own text rather than to one in the Gospel of the Hebrews? (You'd have to ...

The other rich man.

One of our fragments of the so called Gospel of the Hebrews comes solely from the Latin translation of Origen's commentary on Matthew (the extant Greek text lacks this paragraph): Pseudo-Origen, On Matthew 15.14, parallel to Matthew 19.16-26 ( Vetus Interpretatio ): § It is written in a certain gosp...
