Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

So it's possible that the original followers of Jesus who claimed he was raised to heaven after death were familiar with the imperial cult. It is more likely that the original followers of Jesus believed that Jesus was resurrected and was the first of a universal resurrection that would end time. I...

Re: Contradiction in Paula Fredriksen's use of the Argument from Silence

I am satisfied in verifying positively that also Dale Martin does the same argument, contra Paula Fredriksen: It seems that Paula Fredriksen’s answer to her question, ‘why was Jesus crucified, but his followers were not?’ is that ‘both Pilate and the priests would have known perfectly well that Jes...

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

What do you interpret τοῦ μικροῦ to mean? I would be interested to know if there are examples in other Greek texts where it is used to mean ‘younger’. Mark uses νεοτητος in 10:20 for youth and νεον for young in 2:22. (1 Tim 5:1 has νεωτερους for younger.) Re: The meaning of τοῦ μικροῦ I had never c...

Re: Contradiction in Paula Fredriksen's use of the Argument from Silence

The problem is that Paula Fredriksen believes Paul was interested in the historical Jesus and refers to him in his seven authentic letters. However, Paul makes it clear in Galatians that he did not learn about Jesus Christ from men (1:1, 1:11, 2:5), so Paul can’t be used to find out what Jesus said....

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

This view that there was some type of "pure" Judaism that was untouched by Hellenism isn't really accepted anymore by a lot of scholars. Just because you don't want to be influenced by something, doesn't mean you're not going to be influenced by your surroundings. That's just not how real...

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

... It is likely that after 164 BCE Judaism was resisting Greek influence. (Zoroastrianism was closer to Judaism than the pantheon of Greek gods.) Judaism was influenced by the Persian religion with its belief in the resurrection at the end of time and angels and some stories in Genesis come from M...

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

Hebrew and Aramaic are related, many shared words they overlap. MGDL and GDL are in both. They shouldn't be treated as totally different languages Aramaic is a Syrian language and was used by the Assyrians. The Assyrians conquered Israel in the 8th century BCE. Hebrew doesn’t date back as far as Ar...

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

What I think is that any historical mourning women are being reinterpreted as mourning women from mystery and hero cults in Mark's Gospel. So it's not necessarily that they're directly based on Isis, Nephthys, Demeter, etc. but that the author of Mark is using that theme for his "mystery"...

Re: The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

Something to do with hair uh well mean the word tower is sort of connected to growth and growing but the 'uta' ending could just be the Aramaic grammar for 'plural feminine ending', eg what turns 'great' into 'greatness'. I can’t see Audlin’s meaning of braided hair being linked at all to the idea ...

The women watching at the crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40-41

Dbz posed a link to Richard Carrier discussing Bayesian Probabilities which led me to a discussion of Mk 15:40-41 by Carrier https://www.richardcarrier.info/archives/18498 and Mark Goodacre https://www.academia.edu/35287782/Prophecy_Historicized_or_Tradition_Scripturalized_Reflections_on_the_Origin_...
