Re: "James the Just": What is the origin of the phrase?

"... Therefore, in consequence of his pre-eminent justice, he was called the Just, and Oblias, which signifies in Greek Defence of the People, and Justice, in accordance with what the prophets declare concerning him ." Does anyone know what Hegesippus means here? What had the prophets dec...

Re: The seventy weeks of Daniel 9.24-27.

I have some fairly good information on how Daniel's seventy weeks were interpreted by later Jewish and Christian exegetes. But I have read and reread the relevant verses since my childhood and I am still not sure what they themselves are trying to say from the authorial perspective of Daniel: ... E...

Re: The temple saying & traditions before Mark.

I'm really late to this party, but it would be nice to have a list of the pro and contra arguments on how to associate the 7 and 62 weeks in Daniel 9:25: ותדע ותשכל מן־מצא דבר להשיב ולבנות ירושלם עד־משיח נגיד שבעים שבעה ושבעים ששים ושנים תשוב ונבנתה רחוב וחרוץ ובצוק העתים׃ Therefore know and underst...

Re: Evidence Christianity started as mythicist

Suppose that the 12 or 70 apostles and Paul in 35 to 49 AD were going around Judea and the Mideast proclaiming Jesus. It would be much harder for them if there were no real Jesus person at all. People in Nazareth would say that they never heard of Jesus, Mary, etc. and dismiss it as a myth immediate...

Re: "James the Just": What is the origin of the phrase?

The discussion Ken linked to referred to Hegessippus, who wrote in his BOOK V of his 5 volume work: James, the Lord's brother, succeeds to the government of the Church, in conjunction with the apostles. He has been universally called the Just, from the days of the Lord down to the present time. For ...

Re: Having It Both Ways With Secret Mark

Arguments in favor of authenticity: 1. No substantiated evidence of fraud, deception, immoral conduct associated with Morton Smith 2. The document was available for analysis but never examined until 1983 3. It was examined for an extended period of time by one of its harshest critics with no result...

Re: Is the Egyptian god Seth related to the Israelites?

There are some long articles that discuss the topic. The following Open Court article talks about the connection that at least some people (eg. Sethian Gnostics) made between Seth and Christ: Anubis, Seth, and Christ. The Significance of the " Spott-Crucifix. "—The Religious Significance o...

Re: A Suggestion for Revising the Early Writings' Entry for Secret Mark

Thanks. Is Ben speaking theoretically, or did he find close hits of that type of construction? There is a Greek linguist in Athens with whom we discussed the heavenly witnesses grammar who would likely would know the answer to this question, just from his varied Greek background. Are there any exam...

Re: When did Israel become strictly monotheist?

There is a theory that Israel was not "strictly" monotheistic, as there are indications for example that it recognized other, foreign "gods" as existing, but that it didn't consider them to be "God."
