Re: Myth of widespread messianic expectations early first C
I know that your topic is about Messianic expectations from around 2000 years ago, but I was wondering how anyone would really know what it was then? In order to prove that your topic is impossible to really know, I would like to ask you if there is a widespread Messianic expectation right now among...

Re: Psalm 22:17, Hebrew Text, "Like A Lion". Who's Lion?
I think Judaism and Christianity both have very weak arguments about Psalm 22. Neither side really can consider anything but what their religion teaches, so no arguments really matter. People believe what their religion says because their religions are perfect, and their ancient scholars were perfe...

Re: Jewish prophecies of Messiah's arrival for circa 1st c.
I know it is important for history to be accurate, but how do you measure the desire of people for the Messiah at a certain time in history? What amount is a lot or a medium amount or a little desire? How do you know how widespread a belief was? This little detail of history is important, but I doub...

Re: Psalm 22:17, Hebrew Text, "Like A Lion". Who's Lion?
spin, I have said a few times that the writer could be saying "You have put me to the dust of death because dogs have surrounded me, a company of evildoers has surrounded me like a lion. My hands and my feet I will count. All of my bones they will see..." Earlier he said he was a worm and ...

Re: the puppet angel of the Hebrew Bible
iskander, I don't know about what Maimonides and any other famous rabbi said about these Hebrew Bible quotes. I just look at the Hebrew Bible and how most commentators explain the quotes. Usually, they say that G-d can appear as a man or an angel or that the angel is just a messenger that doesn't al...

Re: the puppet angel of the Hebrew Bible
iskander,
Professor Sommer's opinions are not very different from what I have seen in many scholarly books and articles over the years. Most scholars say that G-d can appear as a man or an angel, and they all point out the same quotes in the Hebrew Bible.

the puppet angel of the Hebrew Bible
I think that the angel of the L-rd in the Hebrew Bible that sometimes says "Thus says the L-rd..." and sometimes says "I" like it was G-d speaking is what I call a "puppet angel." Sometimes, it brings messages from G-d and sometimes I think G-d speaks through it like it...

Crackpot's claim about star of Bethlehem prophecy
Hi. I am Kenneth Greifer, and I am a Hebrew Bible crackpot, and one of my many claims to fame is that I think I have solved the mystery of the prophecy in Numbers 24:17 that many people believe is connected to the star of Bethlehem. Usually, Numbers 24:17 is translated as "A star is stepping fo...

Re: Psalm 22:17, Hebrew Text, "Like A Lion". Who's Lion?
spin, The Septuagint translates the word in Psalm 22 as a verb "to pierce" or "dig" (I don't know Greek) and an old fragment has the alef in it, but they are both from around a thousand years after the original Psalm 22. Isn't it possible that during those thousand years that som...
