Re: A recovered Papian fragment?
If the unhelpful fragment does approximate Papias words, I have found that it happens to find a very natural home appended to his authentic fragment discussing Mark’s gospel as follows (I have coloured Papias authentic extracts in blue ): τοῦθ̓ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἔλεγεν : τοῦ Πέτρου δημοσίᾳ ἐν Ῥώμῃ κηρύ...

Re: A recovered Papian fragment?
What you appear to be doing is changing the evidence to suit your theory, rather than the other way round.

Re: A recovered Papian fragment?
Ah, but Clement also preserves the more helpful fragment in Hypotyposes - so if he didn't like Mark, why does he also include the fragment that has Peter giving it his enthusiastic support? However, he is IMO suggesting that there need only have been three.

Re: A recovered Papian fragment?
I have read the introduction and looked at a few of his comments on individual fragments, but I haven't read it all the way through. I thought Carlson could have spent more time on the dating of Papias, as he leaves it all to a brief footnote on the first page (he dates it to the reign of Trajan 98-...

A recovered Papian fragment?
I would appreciate critical feedback on my proposal that we can recover a Papian fragment from Clement's Hypotyposes . I will analyse two Clementine fragments found in Hypotyposes , but preserved by Eusebius in Church History. I start with the fragment found in Eusebius’ sixth volume first, for reas...

Re: Was the Gospel according to the Hebrews (GHeb) composed during a famine?
Hi Charles, Yes, there were famines in Palestine from time to time, more often than not linked to war and environmental conditions. When these famines occur, we usually find a historical record. I can find no historical record of a famine occurring within Jesus' lifetime. Let me be clear what a fami...

Re: Was the Gospel according to the Hebrews (GHeb) composed during a famine?
Aha, it's Herod the Great you're referring to. The 13th year of his reign would equate to 24 BC, which is 51 years before 27 AD, the earliest year of Jesus' ministry. I don't get the sense that this famine lasted 51 years - my reading is that it lasted for a handful of years as the sale of his furni...

Re: Was the Gospel according to the Hebrews (GHeb) composed during a famine?
Hi Charles. Which Herod was this and on what date did this famine occur? And where is the evidence or witness for this?Charles Wilson wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:54 am Lev --
The short answer is "Yes!".
There was a Severe Famine and you can look it up. Herod...
Thanks.

Re: Was the Gospel according to the Hebrews (GHeb) composed during a famine?
In any event, the gospel cited in Books 1 and 2 (the parts with the Jew) seems to resemble a variant Matthew (Gospel of the Hebrews)? From my many encounters trying to piece together the True Word I have noted that the gospel seems to resemble or reflect the theology of Justin Martyr... ...Also, pe...
