Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

I don't want to get too caught up in the topic as it was a passing thought I had had while thinking about Matthew. I will probably start up a new thread and talk about it more there. For me Yeshu ben Stada can be fit into the Pauline cycle in the Marcionite canon. With him we have a good candidate f...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

Mark 6:4 and Matt 13:57 when Jesus declares a prophet is hated in his hometown. Matthew gives a reason for this, the question of Jesus's paternal legacy, while Mark leaves the question as to why hanging heavy in the air. Wondering also if the story of Herod wasn't just used as a ploy to explain the ...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

I don't think that the fact that Mark specifies that this is a fulfillment of the Scriptures is enough to make this verse a late interpolation to follow Matthew's model. On the contrary, one could say that it was Mark's verse that inspired Matthew to add more throughout his text With Mark what is l...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

Paul's theology is transhumanist. Everything human (carnal reproduction, sustenance, and death) are seen as weaknesses and sinful. Once you are reborn through Christ you are personally transformed into a new race, outside the jurisdiction of the law.

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

Joseph: But lets go back to ben Stada shall we? I would take the accounts of Simon of Samaria with a large pinch of salt. They're surely garbled at best. I mean, the account of Hippolytus does have Simon making midrash on the Pentateuch. That's not the way to be an arch-heretic, I mean it sounds li...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

But lets go back to ben Stada shall we? Yeshu ben Stada... well, this is a man analogous to Simon Magus (supposed virgin mothers; both possessed the name of God; Stada possibly being a polemic against Stadios). But let us see also, ben Stada learned of his craft in Egypt, meaning that he would have ...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

I have no doubt that Mark was revised in the presence of Matthew, so yes, parts of Mark were written after Matthew and conformed to Matthew. The real problem here is that people keep thinking of these as actually independent works that are purely preserved in their original form. NOTHING in the New...

Re: Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

Would Mark be the source that Celsus's Jew learned from? "But let us now return to where the Jew is introduced, speaking of the mother of Jesus, and saying that when she was pregnant she was turned out of doors by the carpenter to whom she had been betrothed, as having been guilty of adultery, ...

Possible textual evidence that Mark came after Matthew?

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. ...

Re: Implications of Marcion for early Christianity?

In all seriousness I guess I will participate in the discussion in earnest. Firstly, my thinking about Marcion and his relation with the early Christian movement tries to take into account various systems theories (information, cybernetics, world system, psychoanalysis, and so on) in order to get a ...
