Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

Tertius talks of a deacon of the church of Cenchreae, but there was no official positions with the church during Paul's writing. Paul uses the term "deacon" quite differently. He had no church officials because they were his communities. Tertius is writing at a later time than Paul. Why do you assu...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

to spin: It is quite possible that the two parts are authentic and still not be of help to you. Yes, that would help me! That thread started from your doubts on the authenticity of Ro 16:23b. If authentic, we all agree and there is no need to discuss that anymore. I don't know if "one of the most fr...

Re: Was Aretas King of Damascus @ 2 Corinthians 11:32?

to JW, The above mentions one city, Damascus, and one King, Aretas. Therefore, the natural understanding is that it means that Aretas was King of Damascus. So, if I write, "in New York city, Abdullah the king ...", that king would be the king of NYC? You may need to rethink that. Also, it has been d...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

Spin, I gave some thought to the whole topic, but I do not know if I'll have time to explain everything today. I got pressing matter to attend to. However, I'll make some remarks on you last posting: Yes, I had a lapse yesterday night: the doxology is in p46, at the end of chapter 15. The cover lett...

Re: Ethnarch of King Aretas? the legendary Damascus basket c

The father of (Gaius) Julius Caesar was Gaius Julius Caesar, whose father was Gaius Julius Caesar. "Caesar's household" doesn't give a useful terminus a quo. First, this household is in Ephesus (according to my research, the Philippians letters were not written from Rome), not where Julius and his ...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

You still haven't contemplated what I asked of you. To spell it out: how did the doxology get to where it is in the earliest manuscript we have? If you don't want to think about it, you could just say so, rather than dodging the issue. But there is no doxology in P.46. How can I answer that questio...

Bernard Muller wrote: Now explain the phenomen. Did someone leave out the cover letter, but copied the doxology, and then realizing the issue, stuck it on the end?? Did the scribe decide off his own bat that the doxology went better at the end of ch.15?? I do not know. Bernard, you're just going to...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

The reason why I mentioned P.46 is because it is probably the oldest testimony we have on the issue (c.200). There is no better, so it must be dealt with. P.46 has Romans 16:1-23 in it. That might not work for you. I drew already my conclusions: Romans 16:25-27 is out (interpolation) and Romans 15:...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

I just remember I have a blog post (which may need revision) on the subject. Apparently, Marcion's version of Romans did not have chapters 15 & 16. And there is more to it: http://historical-jesus.sosblogs.com/Historical-Jesus-Blo-b1/60-Did-Marcion-originate-the-Pauline-epistle-Romans-with-chapters-...

Now explain the phenomen. Did someone leave out the cover letter, but copied the doxology, and then realizing the issue, stuck it on the end?? Did the scribe decide off his own bat that the doxology went better at the end of ch.15?? I do not know. Look at the webpage I gave you. There are all kinds...
