Re: Pharisees outside Judea?

From the same article.
Juvenal:"if the father starts keeping sabbath as a God fearing man, the son proceeds to have himself circumcised, and then the son proceeds to despise roman laws so that he may be obedient to the jewish one". Juv. Sat. 14.96-102

Re: Pharisees outside Judea?

I havent read enough NPP to really say ( I've avoided wright, meier, the later dunn, etc on Paul). A few good papers on the end of Roman's and parts of 15. I'm finding some authors, while making connections in Pauline theology between different epistles, run into difficulty as usual but that's becau...

Re: Pharisees outside Judea?

Just a few scattered thoughts here. Not committed to any of this. Despite the lack of explicit evidence for it, there were Pharisees outside Judea, in Antioch and Syria and at least as far north as Tarsus in Cilicia. What would Matthew 23.15 mean if not something like this? Even if we grant it is a...

Re: A suggestion concerning secret sayings in gospel texts.

I've heard Goodacre say similar (anonymity earlier, authorial designation late) in his podcast and I agree with your assessment and I remember saying out loud to the radio, "well that's not entirely correct"

Re: The epistle of James and the sayings of the Lord.

I have been working on another pet theory of mine (part of what led to the OP in the first place) which suggests that the original "words of the Lord" had nothing originally to do with Jesus. They were prophecies uttered by prophets who believed, as per Numbers 11.26-30 and Joel 2.28-32 (3.1-5 Maso...

Where it is even more evident the folly of both Joseph D.L. and Ben C. Smith in disagreeing with Giuseppe on Barabbas.

But the true question is: Is this thread really necessary?
That's the question I ask on any of your 23 new weekly threads.

Re: Dating One Corinthians 13

It's a passing comment by Metzger, he does not try to establish that point further or provide other linkages to 1 Cor 13 to Daniel

Re: Dating One Corinthians 13

Walker's points for 1 Cor 13 interpolation. Can be seen as independent unit, genre differs from chs 12 & 14 unlike 12 & 14 does not contain a single imperative verb and all verbs with people as subject are 1st person vs 3rd for 12 & 14 seems it would be more appropriate after 14 12 & 14 discuss spi...
