Re: Do you know of a list of Josephus' Christian Allusions or Coincidences?
Thanks, John. At this point I am just looking for a list of possible references, your example of Peter being one. In my view, the allusions are not exact and can be literary "foils", but are nonetheless deliberate. My best guess is that the list of allusions that I am thinking of came from...

Do you know of a list of Josephus' Christian Allusions or Coincidences?
I have seen a good list of allusions or coincidences between Josephus' writing and the early Christian stories, but I can't find it any more. One writer who sees coincidences between them is Atwill in his book "Caesar's Messiah," where he theorizes that Josephus helped draft the Christian ...

Re: Richard Carrier versus George Albert Wells
It feels pretty hard to reconstruct from a skeptical yet neutral point of view what exactly happened with so many major events in the Gospels. On one hand Paul and if I remember correctly Peter rites strongly that gospel story is not some myth. Even in the time of the Apostles and soon afterward the...

Re: MARTYRDOM AND ASCENSION OF ISAIAH (1st - early 3rd century AD) Questions
Dear GakuseiDon , Thanks for your replies in the thread, because they gave me a new aspect to see in the "As above so below on earth" verse: ie. the correlations between pairings of strivings and envying, like you mentioned. This afternoon I added a lot my to my answer that I posted ealie...

Re: MARTYRDOM AND ASCENSION OF ISAIAH (1st - early 3rd century AD) Questions
GakuseibDon, I am still going through what you wrote because you brought up a good parallel with the fighting in both realms. So it makes sense that he means And as he saw fighting on the firmament, so he saw fighting on earth. But the author does not leave it at that. To interpret his second statem...

Re: MARTYRDOM AND ASCENSION OF ISAIAH (1st - early 3rd century AD) Questions
(Question 1) What do you think about the claim that what is in the heavens is like what is on earth? It's actually what is in the firmament is the same as what is on earth. The firmament is the abode of Satan. To me, the likeness refers to the fighting going on in the firmament as well as on earth,...

If you want to compare the Slavic text ... yeh, right ... Screen%20Shot%202016-06-25%20at%2012.03.37%20pm.png I need to check again what the phrase in verse 19 translates as. What were you looking for in the Slavonic text? Verse 19 in slavonic translates as "And they did not know him." It...

Re: Vossius had a manuscript of the text of Josephus in which there was not a word about Jesus
Thanks for clearing that up. I had heard something like this claimed before and then saw some kind of debunking of it also, IIRC.
What you quoted is pretty good - it shows that the original claim apparently was that the TF lacked one phrase, not that it lacked all mention of Jesus.

Re: Origen, the gospel of Thomas, and James the Just.
What I take you to be asking about, Ben, is one of the unsourced "Agrapha" of Jesus that shows up in early Church writers, in this case Origen. You are noticing that Origen said "it is written", and Origen doesn't say where, and that it also shows up in the "Gospel of Thomas...

Re: What evidence is there that the possessed people healed by Jesus were allegory of Zealots?
This topic came up for me indirectly when I was reading Josephus. I was skeptical about his story about the Gadarene dissidents who opposed Herod supposedly killing themselves, since I considered the possibility that Herod's forces might have killed them and presented it as suicide. To recap: in Cha...
