Re: Why 1 Timothy 6:13 was moved to mention Pilate

Just wonder what your thoughts are on this. Re: 1 Clement, I still think the ideas in "A Study in 1 Clement" are sound. The Christian text might have been written in the 90s, or possibly later. The editor may have combined it with a Jewish text in the mid second century. OK. Cool. But let's not der...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

I have limited time so perhaps I've missed it, but I have a question. Does the interpolation idea create more problems than the non-interpolation idea? Why would someone interpolate that passage into a work that otherwise post-dates Paul and refers to the Corinthian church as "ancient"? That I woul...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Hm. I'm not buying Herron's argument that what was good for Josephus and the Mishnah regarding the use of the present tense is not good for 1 Clement, at least regarding "One simply cannot say that of 1 Clement: we do not know that 1 Clement knows the Temple is in ruins!" Alright, we don't "know" t...

Re: Why 1 Timothy 6:13 was moved to mention Pilate

Hey Peter, OT but if you have a moment could you respond to this post? http://earlywritings.com/forum/posting.php?mode=quote&f=3&p=101775 What's the question? I feel as though the thread has already excavated my past thoughts better than I remember them myself. :D Just this snip from an article [P....

While I am not opposed to the idea of a compound letter by any means, I think that "amen" can be used to close out a miniature doxology.
Fair enough. It does seem to go on forever though.

Nice.
Thanks. That would tie a few loose ends together, I think.
As far as interpolations go; I note several Amens in the letter. Compiled letter perhaps? Even without the interpolated letter.

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

[That does not jive for me at all. It would be like me praising the police force, in the present tense, for dutifully enforcing the Eighteenth Amendment (Prohibition). It reads to me more like praising the police for doing their eternal duties rather than specifically for enforcing only the Eightee...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

But if that doesn't work for you, I recall that there is evidence that sacrifices continued to be made in Jerusalem after 70 CE. The people continued to bring sacrifices that were offered on a Temple Mount altar that had survived the destructive fire by the Romans. The Mishnah, a central code of Je...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

For me it would be a matter of dating 1 Clement, and since I'm happy with c. 95 CE, then the question for me would be how many written gospels were there c. 95 CE. And the way I look at it is that the earliest references to written gospels we have (Papias, who I date c. 110 CE) mentions only two, M...
