Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

And the gospel made her male because...? Social pressure/expectation?
Because of everything. It would be saying everyone should turn round and all listen to her and accept her ruling on all matters, if she were alive at the end of the apostolic age.

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Dating something/anything from the Long Recension that early... wow. i knew it was coming. guess that makes me a heretic! the reason is, it fits a puzzle piece in for me. let's say this Mary is an elder, and according to Ignatius's reply she was in Rome in Linus's time Let's further say she has som...

Re: In what sense Mark (Judaizer) was a disciple of Simon Peter (docet Papias): an example

That sounds like an hypothesis worth exploring. The Pauline epistles were full of theology and church praxis, but very short on details about Jesus himself. An entertaining gospel might have been just the thing. yes, kind of like an 'open goal' just waiting to be filled. Paul does have an aversion ...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

fair enough and I bow to your superior knowledge on this :) I don't have time to go down every avenue I want to unfortunately Its more likely the other way around then, the 12 years getting into Jesus's life story from there. Not that it's of great importance unless you're a Valentinian and see hidd...

Re: In what sense Mark (Judaizer) was a disciple of Simon Peter (docet Papias): an example

Ben those words may not be magical but when left untranslated they appear to be! If that tradition (unique to Mark?) goes back to the first edition it sort of makes Jesus seem a little magical, especially with the 'potions' and ointments Could this be a literary device of Mark that become unacceptab...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Is this just referring to 1 Kings 3.16-28? have a little look at the Ignatius/Maria letter, i'm sure i'm seeing something here here's a summary of what i'm seeing - an entreaty to excercise the mind in reading the OT quotes that follow, that are rather free as well not literal - a quote reproving a...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

whose daughter Mary is mentioned in the same breath as Boethus' daughter Martha in a Midrash. curious, could there be a Nicodemus/Queen Helena connection? Helena was married to Monobaz/Bazeus/Monobazus (Lazarus / Boethus???) her brother! (Talmud alert) As it says in the Thunder Perfect Mind "I am t...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Interesting! This is almost impossible task isn't it My pet theory is Dositheus (the gift of God) was John (a Baptist). The original Father/Jesus. If Dositheus wasn't John maybe he was 'Lazarus' You can see in the gospels the Christ moving through different people, John, Lazarus and so on, then ther...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

I personally think that Paul's motive is transparent in Galatians as it stands. He is claiming — vehemently — that his gospel came from God, not from humans, so it makes sense that he should be at pains to play down the extent of his contact with those who were already preaching some form of gosp...
