Re: Quest of the mythical Jesus available online

Regarding Simon Magus. In a recently published paper in Religion in the Roman Empire (RRE), titled 'In 'Simon Magus: The Invention and Reception of a Magician in a Christian Context', Jan N. Bremmer discusses, according to the abstract, - "... his first occurrence in the Acts of the Apostles (c. 100...

Re: Top suspects that could have invented the historical Jesus?

... the attempt to use Marcion to demonstrate Gal. 1:18-19 or 4:4 were interpolations, but ignoring that he includes 1 Thess. 2:14-16, and then also ignoring the hugely problematic epistemic limits we have with Marcion's fragments... i.e. we cannot conclude whether the absence of a text is because ...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

I'm reaching out to Rüpke, so I'm putting this conversation on hold until I get confirmation from the person himself. I don't care to play games of "who is interpreting vague statements best" when the author is stilling living and can be contacted. The issue isn't "who is interpreting vague stateme...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

1) Rüpke's comments on there being no early narratives and this not being a mistake is not a comment in favor of mythicism, that just requires you to seriously project the idea on him. I'm not ''seriously' projecting 'the idea' on him. That's a misrepresentation of what I said. I merely used his st...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

I still think it would be unsafe based on any of those to make any conclusions about Rüpke's view of the historicity of Jesus. None of those challenge the historicity. - "the historicity" is a loaded phrase. Generally/widely (ie. beyond discussion of Pantheon or of Rüpke's possible personal views)....

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

1. Perhaps I will include those, since we may impart mythicism on a post-facto basis. Yes, that's a good way of framing it ie. they "may impart mythicism on a post-facto basis." Not that many people are likely to read them, or, if they do, as imparting mythicism (it would be interesting if others p...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

... I've been working to document academic mythicist material, as well as responses to it by other academics. Though my mythicist book (work in progress) has been kindly shared here, I thought I would share the bibliography I've been developing, which lists numerous peer reviewed works on both side...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

https://cmepshansen9.wixsite.com/mysite/my-blog I've been digging up and exposing sex offenders in Biblical studies and compiling a list of them. I have received numerous emails, aid, and support from academics worldwide in doing this. Yes, you've clearly compiled a list. In what way have you been ...

Re: Resource for Mythicist and Response Documentation

2) I would argue sex offenders and abusers are undesirable for any academic society, group, university, or to associate with. While you make (sic) [may(?)] dislike this, it is necessary and frankly my work doing this has been heralded by numerous academics for bringing awareness to the systemic sex...

Re: Joseph/Serapis, Pt 3

... I would like to comment on Galimberti's suggestion that the account in the Historia Augusta derives from a life of Hadrian attributed to Phlegon. I doubt if this 'life of Hadrian' attributed to Phlegon ever existed. I doubt if the claim in the Historia Augusta So desirous of a wide-spread reput...
