Re: Raphael Haim Golb

" The chief corollary of the [Golb] hypothesis is that the Essenes had nothing to do either with the Qumran settlement - a fortress in Golb's opinion - or with the manuscripts." ....Geza Vermes, The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English pg. 19-20. Considering all the recent discoveries in DNA and ar...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

to MrMacSon, His references to 'Chrestus' and to 'Christians' were probably not about Jesus-believing Christians. They were probably about another religion that used those terms or to which those terms were applied (eg. an Egyptian mystery religion) Please substantiate your "probably" about that ot...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

... except "the etnarch of Damascus". Sure, but Paul never wrote Aretas IV was master of Damascus. And his etnarch in this city did not have to be the one governing it on behalf of Aretas IV. As I explained here: http://historical-jesus.info/61.html My previous comment already dealt with the issue,...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

Aretas had an etnarch in Damascus during Paul's early adult life (2 Corinthians). This Aretas was likely Aretas IV who died in 40 CE. That king was not Aretas III (who ruled Damascus 85-72 CE & 69-64 BCE) because at the time, Corinth was destroyed (from 146 to 44 BCE). But Corinth is existing durin...

Re: Golb

It is not a question of their own ignorance or logical fallacies but a calculated attempt at disinformation and/or silencing opposing views. e.g. Raphael Haim Golb. Actually, Raphael Golb was dealing with the issue of the academy's reaction to his father's work and was working on the desire to set ...

Re: Capernaum and Marcionite Priority

Just a small quibble: we are not dealing with a "fountain", but a source for running water, ie from the ground, that we would normally call a spring.

Argument from atheism

1. Atheists claim Jesus did not exist.
2. Everyone knows that atheists are wrong about everything.
3. Therefore, Jesus existed.

Re: Didn't Know This Was Controversial - Schools Get Rid of BC and AD

The Jewish calendar is the only one common to all humanity. What? " In the century following the fall of Jerusalem (AD 70), certain Jewish scholars took the date 3761/3760 BC and assigned it to the time described in Genesis 1 and 2. Thus, the Jews preserved the correct date for calendar calculation...

Re: Didn't Know This Was Controversial - Schools Get Rid of BC and AD

One way of looking at it would be to interpret the evidently deeply offended religious "conservatives" as an indication that the BC/AD label did indeed serve an ideological agenda and therefore should indeed be banished. Common era means the same as AD , but with one difference , namely : common er...
