Re: What Happens When We Ignore Rule #1

Without primary sources we don't have ways to fathom the veracity of tradition. That doesn't make those stories wrong per se, just currently unusable for historical purposes. No? The OP and the cited example therein set the stage for a resounding "no." It may not be the only way to get to that no, ...

What Happens When We Ignore Rule #1

To answer "What Happens When We Ignore Rule #1": we are back umm, telling stories... based on tradition.

Without primary sources we don't have ways to fathom the veracity of tradition. That doesn't make those stories wrong per se, just currently unusable for historical purposes. No?

Re: Born of a woman (as an idiomatic expression).

1QS 11.21a, for example: "As what shall one born of woman be considered in your presence?" Is this not an issue of human versus deity? It could be. I don't know how wide the notion of "born of a woman" could have been. If being born of a Jewish woman can be reduced to the equivalent of being born o...

Re: Born of a woman (as an idiomatic expression).

Yo Ben C.! I don't think that "born of a woman" is idiomatic. I think it is a culturally laden phrase, somewhat like "born of immigrant parents" is in American dream narratives. Do we have the notion of "born of a woman" in the Judeo-Christian tradition where it does not refer to a Jewish mother? To...

Re: Rule #1 of Historical Reasoning

spin If you feel that my posts are off-topic, then take it up with the site administrator, and we'll have that discussion in the appropriate setting, not here, where that is itself off-topic. So far it seems you don't take comments about your apparently tangential posting well. The topic at least p...

Re: Rule #1 of Historical Reasoning

spin Where exactly do you think you "generally agreed with [Neil's] principal points in the OP"? Why don't we cut to the chase instead. Was there something specific in my post that you found to be in disagreement with any of Neil's principal points? You asserted general agreement, yet your initial ...

So far as I can tell, I generally agreed with your principal points in the OP.
Where exactly do you think you "generally agreed with [Neil's] principal points in the OP"?

If you did agree, perhaps it would be better that you added to that conversation.

Re: sentenced to death for atheism’

Fact is islam has the most primitive ideology and requires a complete lack of moderation and requires a 100% commitment to live a myth. This simpletonification of islam is like pointing out that the old testament advocates stoning wayward children and straying women, and saying—just as meaningfully...

Re: sentenced to death for atheism’

But if his recent girlfriend is Indonesian as reported, it will explain the motive. I am still waiting for more REAL evidence to be provided. If he did convert the fake news surely will not report his new found religious status, if true. The foreign minister of Australia has confirmed that Marilou ...

Re: outhouse still doesn't understand the logical fallacy of misleading vividness

Jesus, you're being dopey, still jabbering about Islam when a tool with automatic weapons just took out 59 people injuring 270+ others at a country music festival. This is the 271st mass shooting this year. Radicalized muslims pail in comparison to such cowardly acts, fostered by automatic gun sale...
