Re: Chasing Hegesippus: a short commentary

... But it's really impossible to say and doesn't add to our understanding, so I've left it at "someone." Sure, it may never be possible to say; and may not add a lot to our understanding, other than the roles of both vertical/inter-generational influence & integration, and the sigini...

Re: Chasing Hegesippus: a short commentary

The third possible witness (and first sure witness) to Hegesippus is Eusebius of Caesarea. Take note of the fact, however, that Origen, to whom Eusebius owes much, changed his center of studies from Alexandria to Caesarea. If there was a manuscript falsely attributed to Josephus in Alexandria, whic...

Re: Natural reading

... For example, when one reads the birth narrative in Matthew it indicates that Josephus was living in Bethlehem, as no change of location is given between Joseph's angelic visitation and the birth of Jesus, yet Jesus was born in Bethlehem, so the natural reading is that Joseph lived in Bethlehem....

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

Beyond the fact that we have no surviving tradition that denies the historicity of gospel narrative? The history of gospel narrative since when? - Since production of Codices Sinaiticus & Vaticanus in the 4th C? And please refrain from trying to cobble together some half-assed attempt at citing...

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

Is there an indication that these post-resurrection encounters are less, more or as frequent as pre-resurrection encounters? Sláinte . AFAIK, with the exception of the "Infancy Gospels", all of the (non canonical) encounters are post-resurrection. Cheers. When and where do you - or anyone...

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

... The idea that the gospel narrative was entirely made up is simply less likely than the alternative. That' very black & white; and probably a false-dichotomy, Stephan. There are many possible permutations, especially as the narratives were likely embellished and modified over subsequent gene...

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

Practically all of the Gnostic Gospels and Acts feature the encounters of the apostles with a post-resurrection Jesus. These encounters also usually feature the apostles asking the post-resurrection Jesus all sorts of further questions. Cheers. Is there an indication that these post-resurrection en...

"the evangelist/apostle"?? .... "a myth"? "under no circumstances"??

How do you propose myths start?

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

The narrative about Jesus certainly has historicity; the character may not.

Moreover, mythology is how the christianized west has described preChristian theology.

Christian theology can be categorized as a subset of mythology.

Re: The Propaganda War Against Mythicism [Vridar]

but the same experience is not described in the gospel with respect to Jesus crucifixion. People describing events where real butterflies come & land after a relative's death is different to other people reporting seeing images of people-who-have-recently-died; or allegations of other people see...
