Re: Ehrman v. Bob Price debate?

Ehrman's gotta be a millionaire with his book royalties. Price probably needs the speaking fees just to keep the electricity on. Unless you are a very widely read scholar like J D Crossan, I heard that there is not really very much money in academic book sales, even when dum'ed down fo' us ever' da...

Re: Rending of the veil

Yes, Virginia, there was a Sanhedrin. ... And it is possible even for a Sanhedrin to convene and do things illegally. Sorry if I ignored the links you posted without any comment as to the gems I would discover to open them, as I (and I'm sure many others who lurk here) do not have the patience to p...

Re: Rending of the veil

I think we forget that the temple operated more or less independently of the civil government. If a non-Judean entered the temple enclosure area that was restricted to Israelites, isn't there remains of a sign warning that this would result in their immediate death? That is not the same, I admit, as...

Re: Some Notes on Plato

Plato did not divide the sky into multiple heavens as far as I recall Correct. IIRC, Plato did not consider any of his divine principles, ideas, and such, to reside in the material world, Correct. or even be subject to time or space limitations. I would assume so. Yes, very dialogue-ish. :ugeek: So...

Re: Rending of the veil

Odd that the author/interpolator of the Testament of Benjamin thinks the saviour would be crucified in the temple . Yes, odd that. Testament of Benjamin 9.1-5 (R. H. Charles translation): 1 And I believe that there will be also evil-doings among you, from the words of Enoch the righteous: that ye s...

Re: Rending of the veil

While, as a historical source, the gospel of Mark could be relating a historical event, it is not corroborated in non-Christian literature so the matter has to be considered conjectural. Personally, I think the rending of the veil before the holy of holies was a metaphor for how Christ's sacrifice w...

Re: Some Notes on Plato

Plato Phil., Respublica Stephanus page 516, section a, line 8 ἐκ δὲ τούτων τὰ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ αὐτὸν τὸν οὐρανὸν νύκτωρ ἂν ῥᾷον θεάσαιτο, “Then there would be need of habituation, I take it, to enable him to see the things higher up. And at first he would most easily discern the shadows and, after ...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 9.24 (into heaven itself).

No, Jesus offers his sacrifice below the heaven. When in the highest heaven, Jesus uses his blood to cleanse the same heaven. Was Jesus a priest already when he offered his sacrifice? Ben. I am reminded of the old "Fearless Fosdick" comic, which was itself a spoof of Chester Gould's "...
