Re: The structure of gMark
It is structured to reflect the progression of the individual Christian as he/she comes to faith and, like Jesus, ends his/her life victoriously having walked the "way" to the end overcoming the fleshliness of the body and Satan's attempts to derail and mislead one from the "way"...

Parpola's views are rather controversial see for example https://www.jstor.org/stable/606013?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents Andrew Criddle Yeah, I know. Not all of his views are controversial but definitely some of them. I find that some scholars tend to push back against comparing "pagan" ...

Re: gMark is intended to be history writing
But do you think he meant his intended audience to understand it as history? Or just allogory? Or both at the same time (which is really what I’m arguing)? That's a good question that I'm not completely sure about. I think it's possible that for most people the story was meant to be taken as histor...

Re: Gospels as allegories for initiation
One problem is that a lot of what is claimed about the myths associated with the mysteries of Dionysus is guesswork. See Recycling Laertes' Shroud Andrew Criddle Edmonds questions whether there was a specific cult of Dionysus that we can label "Orphic" that had their own coherent doctrine...

Re: gMark is intended to be history writing
I think the crucial evidence that the author of gMark presents his story, his narrative, as history writing comes right off the bat, when he inserts his story into the frame of prophecy: "As it is written in the prophet Isaiah" (Mark 1:2). His story may be one very special form of history...

Re: An Assyriologist: "Descent of Ishtar/Inanna an allegory."
The intricate connection between mystery religion, esotericism and emperor cult,... This is the key to understanding the story of the savior and the descent and ascent of the soul. It started out as a cult of the emperor/king and eventually took on the form of a personal salvation story for all ind...

An Assyriologist: "Descent of Ishtar/Inanna an allegory."
I don't think we can really understand the writings of the NT(and Hebrew scriptures) without studying all of the religions of the ancient near east. There's reoccurring concepts that you find and, as I''ve said before, these concepts are concealed under allegory, symbolism, and metaphor. An Assyriol...

Re: Gospels as allegories for initiation
I think Dionysus may have been a mystery god from the beginning. If not, then maybe the mysteries added his death and resurrection to his pre-existing myth.andrewcriddle wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:16 pm On the whole the pagan mysteries used pre-existing myths rather than inventing new ones.
