Re: 1 Clement
1 Clement is clear testimony that the Roman church had authority over other Christian communities. The letter begins with a clear emulation of the superscription in the Pauline letters. There is a claim that the Corinthians have ask for a 'consultation' with the Romans: owing, dear brethren, to the...

Re: Papias
As I have said in multiple places recently, I have doubts that the writings of Papias contained explanations of the sayings of Jesus. I don't believe we have, in the limited quotations available, any such example, which I find somewhat curious.

Re: Did Papias report not the "sayings of the Lord" but "the oracles concerning the Lord"?
And as I've remarked previously, of the quotations we have from Papias' Expositions.... very few seem to have anything to do with the "sayings of the Lord". They're about Philip and his daughters, or Judas and his entrails, or as Eusebius says, "some other more fantastical things&quo...

Re: Did Papias report not the "sayings of the Lord" but "the oracles concerning the Lord"?
Let's not forget that Papias must have had a job that involved a lot of travel, as he was encountering folks who at least claimed to have heard the teachings of the first and second generation apostles and key disciples. I am not so sure about that. He writes, "And if anyone should chance to c...

How much of Mark 16:1-8 is original ?
I am spawning this thread to avoid hijacking Stephan's thread http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4637 In that thread, Stephan advances an argument that Mark's original testimony is that Jesus / Christ / Messiah disappears into the void after his death. There is no resurrection, a...

Re: Somewhat of a Breakthrough in My Own Personal Research
I am not that smart. At best I am good at spotting parallels. Look at the Hebrew of Daniel 9:26. I render it: messiah will be killed and disappear = יכרת משיח ואין לו Couldn't that be the limit of meaning of the short (original) ending of Mark. It is a confirmation of scripture - in this case Danie...

Re: Significance of the Gospel of Thomas if the Canonical Gospels are late?
The following is only going to be tangentially relevant to the OP, but the OP got my mind thinking in this direction. Feel free to reprimand me for this failure of etiquette. Papias refers to two writings, one by Mark, and one by Matthew, but does not call them gospels. Does not use that word "...

Re: How could Paul afford his extensive travels?
Doesn't the didache warn communities about false itinerant preachers exploiting Christian generosity? Doesn't that suggest that genuine preachers like Paul could expect the full support of fledgling Christian communities to support their missionary activities?

Re: Who axed Acts 8:37?
The verse appears in the Old Latin, one of the Syriacs, the Vulgate, and one of the Coptics. So Ben, do you think the verse is original? I have read from Google one possible reason for the verse being removed... as the result of an early church interpretation that serious sin could not be forgiven ...
