Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

I note that Laura Knight-Jadczyk has arrived, even before Marchant, to the dangerous connection of Pilate with the crucifixion of Judas the Galilean: Because he always refers to Christ crucified, Christ on the cross. Apparently Paul had something pretty profound happen to him, so my speculation is t...

Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

Returning to the topic and ignoring deliberately the Hasmoneanists :whistling: , I would like to comment this point of DCH: Whoever Maximinus' partisans chose from Josephus' account to be "Jesus" was likely a rebel or an unauthorized claimant to the Judean throne, not necessarily called &q...

Re: Why "they glorified him" finds his origins in Vespasian's propaganda

Schmidt has suggested that the two criminals crucified with Jesus have a parallel with those who share power with the triumphator in Roman triumphs, as they would stand either side of him when he was acclaimed. However, he proposes that the motif in Mark is directed against the “self-divinisation e...

Josephus's stories are not comparable at all to Gospel stories, sorry. If you are so blind to not recognize the difference, then, sorry, I would interrupt here the discussion. :silenced:

Bottom line - you have no historical evidence....
how dare you deny the historicity of Judas the Galilean? :eh:

Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

A serious historian would keep to historical evidence. really do you consider equally probable (sic) the possibility that Judas the Galilean, after his revolt (because it is a historical FACT that he was a rebel against Rome) escaped miraculously to death ? If the answer is yes, then I consider you...

Josephus does not say when, or how, his figure of Judas the Galilean died.
But a serious historian can very well infer it, given what we already know from Josephus.
when: in the interval 18-26 CE
how: a Roman crucifixion, what else?
where: somewhere in Judea.

Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

Josephus does not state when, or how, Judas the Galilean died - it is pure speculation that Pilate executed this Josephan figure around 20/21 c.e. if you concede, contra Eusebius, that Pilate was ruling in 18-26 CE, then a probable victim of the his repression (during 18-26 CE) was Judas the Galile...

Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

As I wrote in my earlier post - Peter Marchant is doing fine with his argument over dating Pilate early. My problem is with his reasoning over Judas the Galilean....... You can't accept the first Marchant without accepting the second Marchant, since the only action made by a Pilate who ruled during...

Re: Peter Marchant: The Trouble with Pilate

It is not a mere argument from silence. As Marchant points out, it is basically impossible that the entire anti- Acta apologetics raised by Eusebius was reduced to say " Pilate didn't rule during that time ". Think about this: the Emperor himself promotes the diffusion of the Acta Pilati ,...
