P52 (P.Ryl.457)

On the subject of the dating of P52 (P.Ryl.457), Don Barker wrote a section of his article, "The Dating of New Testament Papyri" ( New Testament Studies 57 (2011), pp. 571–582), on the fragment, concluding: it is difficult to place P.Ryl. 457 in a very narrow time period. When the general ...

Re: When do the expanded forms Jesus, Christ, Chrest 1st app

The 4th century Marcionite inscription is another item of evidence that explicates "Chrestos" and not "Christos". So the score to the end of the 4th century for the "Christ/Chrest" tournament of evidence is something like .... Chrest 7, Christ 0. Don't you think that t...

Re: The Dating, Authorship, and Meaning of the Pauline Epist

The issue is the specific word THUSIASTHRION . It is not a usual Greek word. It is a primarily Septuagintal/Jewish Hellenist/Christian word. In the NT it always refers to altars (literal or symbolic) to the Jewish/Christian God. In the Septuagint it usually means an altar for Yahweh but it can occa...

Re: When do the expanded forms Jesus, Christ, Chrest 1st app

The Vaticanus manuscript of the same age, utilizes a slightly transitional spelling : "Chreistian." Extremely naughty, mountainman. This is not a "transitional" spelling. You just made that up, as is so frequently the case with your claims. Actually that's not the case. I ...

Re: The Pauline Gospel was a Late Invention

I was not thinking church as in a fully structured entity as we know churches today, or even in recent centuries. Nor specifically meetings of christians. "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gos...

Re: The Pauline Gospel was a Late Invention

Certainly Galatians 1 suggests that that 'Paul' was dealing with an established church. That's certainly wrong. But try your best to show that the people in Jerusalem were anything other than Jewish messianists, such as John the Baptist's folloers were. There is absolutely no sign of an organized J...

Re: The Pauline Gospel was a Late Invention

Is it not your position that the Pauline Corpus was composed after c 70 CE? Certainly Galatians 1 suggests that that 'Paul' was dealing with an established church. That's certainly wrong. But try your best to show that the people in Jerusalem were anything other than Jewish messianists, such as Joh...

Re: The Pauline Gospel was a Late Invention

Balderdash! :D Bladerdash to you!! Balderdash to Doherty and Ehrman. You seem to be promoting the status quo. Please, this is NOT Sunday School. This is an extremely serious matter. Many Scholars have already shown that the Pauline Corpus are late writings. We are dealing with massive forgeries, fr...

Re: The Pauline Gospel was a Late Invention

The most natural Greek syntactically would be τον Ιησου του λεγομενου χριστου αδελφον. The defining genitive is usually wedged between article and noun. For example, in 2.186 we get the sons of Hasmoneaus, των Άσαμωναιου παιδων. There are some good examples in 2:158, here's Aristobulus son of Herod ...
