Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 7.14 (sprung from Judah).

It seems to me that Hebrews conflicts with what is said about the Torah in Matthew 5, but perhaps not - there are different views on what "fulfill the law" means. Anyway, the writer of Hebrews insists that the sacrificial system and priesthood set up in Exodus was 1) temporary, now superse...

Re: Torah given by angels?

Thanks for the distinction between two Torot. I can see how what Hebrews says is consistent with it. To what do the numbers 152-156 and 155-156 refer - to pages in On the Making of Fornication? "The dream world" doesn't answer the question, "who is supposed to be speaking the above ve...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 7.14 (sprung from Judah).

If I were writing the epistle, I do not think I would have worded Hebrews 10.1-3 the way it is worded if I were aware that the temple had been destroyed and that the official cultus was effectively at an end. Ben. IMHO, Hebrews is an attempt to systematize and "explain" some of the high C...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 7.14 (sprung from Judah).

Ben, do you think that Hebrews was written before the destruction of the Temple? I tend to suspect it was, but two things about this epistle keep me open to the other option: The author sometimes uses a sort of scriptural present tense for things that one might normally use a future or a past tense...

Torah given by angels?

There are a number of NT verses that say that the Torah was given through angels, and this is affirmed in Josephus, AJ 15.163: http://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/4729/where-did-the-idea-that-the-law-was-administered-through-angels-come-from Does rabbinic tradition generally agree with t...

Yes, thanks for the summary. It sounds as though Ory's is at least a replacement hypothesis.

Re: When did Esarhaddon conquer Egypt?

Dan'el Kahn in Studien zur Altägyptischen Kultur, 0Bd. 34 (2006), pp. 251-267, says that after a defeat in 673 B.C.E., Esarhaddon came back in 671 and conquered at least northern Egypt in three pitched battles. Some parts of the country resisted Assyrian suzeraignty, however.
