Re: Steven DiMattei: Case Against Mythicists

5) If Jesus Christ of the gospels was a literary invention (which he was even from my admission above; so let’s say a literary creation ex nihilo from the Mythists’ perspective) then for what reason? So that a heretical sect of Aramaic Jews and later non-Jewish Greeks could be persecuted by its mai...

Re: Was Bishop Pococke full of Pococke?

Jay, first let me say that the earlier post which laid out the various forms of historical time measurement was great. That post is like a mini history lesson the subject. Daniel was making a prediction about what would happen in seventy weeks or 490 days later. One has to arbitrarily change the pre...

Re: Was Bishop Pococke full of Pococke?

It would be more likely that later Christians, trying to find some secret meaning in what Luke had written would distort the Hebrew scriptures in this absurd fashion. Would Polycarp have done such a thing? (distort the scriptures to come up with some secret meaning for the purpose of evangelizing)

Re: Was Bishop Pococke full of Pococke?

it would have been impossible for anybody to look up what happened in the 15th year of Tiberius' Reign But what if your agenda is to prove that Jesus came in fulfillment of the scriptures? "Luke" could have used the Canon of Kings which certainly existed at that time. Wikipedia says: http...

Re: Was Bishop Pococke full of Pococke?

So you don't think that the author of Luke choose the 15th year of Tiberius because it aligned the Daniel/Ezra prophecies with the start of John or Jesus ministry?

Re: Was Bishop Pococke full of Pococke?

The choice of using the 15th year of Tiberius was discussed in this thread: http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=147&start=10 Peter explains it best that the author of Luke was using that specific year in order to triangulate the prophecies of Daniel and Ezra: The Gospel (of Ma...

Re: Digital Recreation of What Rome Looked Like in 320 CE

http://romereborn.frischerconsulting.com/ the leaders of the project decided that A.D. 320 was the best moment in time to begin the work of modeling. At that time, Rome had reached the peak of its population, and major Christian churches were just beginning to be built. After this date, few new civi...

Re: Westar finally releases Acts Seminar Report

So.... Did Polycarp write it? http://www.robertmprice.mindvendor.com/reviews/trobisch_first.htm And can we plausibly date Luke to about this time? (if it shared authorship w Acts) Also, that EM Cooper guy is probably a good insight to attitudes of the days when Blasphemy/Heresy laws were enforced by...
