Re: Who were the "Petrines"? And why supercessionism?
The whole idea of "Petrines," however, comes from a man of the 19th century, F.C. Bauer, a disciple of Hegel who saw history resolving itself in the synthesis of opposites. Thus he draws a fully typological history pitting Peter against Paul, ending up with the unification of Peter and Pa...

Re: Who were the "Petrines"? And why supercessionism?
Christians were reliant on the Septuagint scripture, and even Marcion who excised it from his canon has only sawed his branch off the tree from which it stems. Ok thanks for that analogy. I was under the (mistaken) impression that the Gnostic/Marcionite Christianity had originated independent of an...

Re: Who were the "Petrines"? And why supercessionism?
Thanks for your thoughtful response Peter... Gnosticism as we observe it through its texts at Nag Hammadi is closely tied to the interpretation of the scriptures. In that line, by "Gnosticism" you mean "Christian Gnosticism"? And by "scriptures" you mean Hebrew/Israelit...

Who were the "Petrines"? And why supercessionism?
As I understand it, Christianity started as a Gnostic movement, and had nothing to do with Judaism. Is that correct? Somebody stop me right there if I'm wrong. OK, then along comes the "Petrines" who do everything possible to hijack this Gnostic movement into a Jewish supercessionism thing...

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
I think it is more likely that the ministry of Jesus was tied to a forty-ninth year before the destruction.
Stephen, if you're there, how would this work? Is the number 49 tied to the Daniel prophecy of 7x7 = 49?

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
Thanks Maryhelena.... I'm satisfied that the 70AD is a coincidence (dumb luck) on account of the Ezra/Daniel/Artaxerxes/Ptolemy/Exiguus thing. Unless if anyone else wants to step forward with any other theories... :) If Ptolemy "preserved" the list of kings - he did not create it. i.e. the...

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
the 69 weeks of years (483 years) spoken about in the book of Daniel, which if subtracted from the given date would mean 457 BC in our system. That year is also the 7th year of Artaxerxes from Ezra 7:7-8 Peter or Maryhelena (or anyone), the actual dating of the reign of Artaxerxes is not given in S...

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
Are you questioning the Josephan dating for the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of it's temple to the Romans? I'm not sure... It's just that it seems a little *too convenient* that the destruction of the temple happens at that magical septuagint number of 70 AD. its destruction, which happene...

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
Thanks Peter. This made me dig more into it, and perhaps my question could be rephrased as: "By what method did Dionysius Exiguus place the birth of Jesus?" If we look at wikipedia, we get stuff like: he also stated was 525 years "since the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ". ...

Re: Is Jesus birth backdated 70 years from the Temple destru
I think it is more likely that the ministry of Jesus was tied to a forty-ninth year before the destruction. What is that based on? In fact, I have no idea what you mean, when you employ, as a supposed English word, midrash: It's from Hebrew... RM Price explains it in the link I posted. Here's the W...
