Re: Coins and Gospels
There are legitimate open questions about the Qumran hoard (or hoards). Lack of a final report is unfortunate. But, in case anyone cares, spin has both undervalued the issue of intrusive coins (non-Qumran finds--how can that not matter?) and appears to have misrepresented what Robert Donceel wrote. ...

Re: Coins and Gospels
Robert Donceel, who at the time had access to all the de Vaux Qumran materials, asserted that coins (**plural**) intrusive to the Qumran hoard had been mixed in in Amman. If Donceel is right (or do I hear an argument that he is wrong?), then isn't it a rather big mistake to report non-Qumran coins a...

Re: Coins and Gospels
Already posted here: Robert Donceel in RB on being surprised that in the Amman museum intrustive (that is, non-Qumran) coins had been mixed in with the Qumran hoard coins. And already mentioned here: many people involved with the dig were quite able to identify coins of Trajan, with his image and na...

Re: Coins and Gospels
Caution might be worth suggesting when it comes to K. L.'s interpretation of Qumran coins and Qumran archaeology, spinian recommendation notwithstanding. Does any numismatist or archaeologist agree with either one?

Re: Coins and Gospels
Roger, the hoard I referred to was the three vessels with silver coins found at Qumran, with the latest dated coin from 9/8 BCE. I replied that a publication that claimed the hoard included much later coins was unreliable. For example, coins of Trajan, with an image of Trajan and the name of Trajan ...

Re: Coins and Gospels
The purpose of my Jan 9 note was to pass along information: reason to question whether some coins reported as if from Qumran were actually not from Qumran.

Re: Coins and Gospels
The 2009 book cited by spin ("New Perspectives on the Roman Coinage....") proposed that the Qumran silver hoard might have been deposited as late as the third century. This proposal contradicts the findings of de Vaux, Seyrig, and Spijkerman. The proposal also contradicts the findings of R...

Re: Book - Parables of Enoch: A Paradigm Shift
I commented on Mark Goodacre's blog post on the Nag Hammadi discovery stories, noting that the Qumran Cave One discovery accounts have been questioned by Weston Fields in the book mentioned below, especially on pages 111-113 and endnotes. "Thanks, Mark. I was aware of doubts about the Nag Hamma...
