Re: Mark, Josephus and the Book of Esther

. The importance of repetition in the Mt (Hebrew Book of Esther) Anyone who reads the Bible attentively will notice that one of the key rhetorical devices the biblical authors use is repetition. Repetition is everywhere! You don’t have to read very far in the Bible in order to realize this – the ver...

Re: Detering on Carrier's criticism

My impression is that Detering's reservations about Carrier still have another specific reason. Detering presented his own opinion always as part of a long scientific tradition (radical criticism) and respected all other mythicists, although he did not fully shared their views. One of his intentions...

Re: Papyrus Vindobonensis 2325.

Interesting. And thanks to Ben Smith for keeping one of biblical studies' most useful websites online. Are there any photos of the fragment? It's always been a bit of a problem that the cock doesn't actually crow twice in Mark. ν ἀλεκτρυὼν δὶς κοκ https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9dAswVTrr6k/V0_TmNXifiI/...

Re: Papyrus Vindobonensis 2325.

I find two things particularly interesting. First, the likely absence of the "Amen"-word (very important for Mark).

Re: Mark: Why the Baptist had to die for some other reasons

. A number of scholars discuss two more points - the fate of John the Baptist is also used by Mark to foreshadow the fate of Jesus (Neil wrote about this topic a nice post ) - Mark presented Jesus as the „ true shepherd-king “ in contrast to the death-bringing “king” Herod I agree and think that bot...

Re: Mark: Why the Baptist had to die for some other reasons

It seems to me to be clear that the focus of the story is on Herod (and not on John or other persons). It shows Herod with a complex and contradictory character and how he interacts with opinions, persons, their intentions and activities. Mark seems to place great emphasis on the listening of Herod...

Re: Mark: Why the Baptist had to die for some other reasons

Nice work, KK. We may add that the historical scenario surrounding John the Baptist's death (according to Josephus) puts it around 37. This is incompatible with Mark, in which Jesus begins his ministry after JBap's death, yet is crucified by Pilate (who was removed from office in 36). Agreed. Thank...

Re: Mk 9:49 Proof that Canonical Mark is Not the Ur-Text

So because scholars make bad arguments ignore the obvious borrowing from Hebrew ... ignore the obvious borrowing from Paul 1 Cor 3:13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. ...

Re: Mk 9:49 Proof that Canonical Mark is Not the Ur-Text

Paul-Louis Couchoud produced further evidence and "proofs" that canonical Mark is not the Ur-text. Conclusions: All those make it very likely that Mark's Gospel had been authored in Latin. I would not be surprised if tomorrow it will be proved that the Ur-text was Coptic or Sanskrit :good...

Re: Mark: Why the Baptist had to die for some other reasons

KK, you would agree that The Disciples are primary in GMark and John the Baptist is secondary. Intercalation enclosing or “sandwiching” one story in the middle of a different story (forming an A1, B, A2 pattern), so that each affects the interpretation of the other ... In the Intercalation the midd...
