Re: we shall be called with-Chrēstoi and Chrēstians in X
FWIW, Lampe's Patristic Greek Lexicon (1961 ed.) has an entry on συνχρηστος/συγχρηστος, referencing this letter as its only instance. The non-preferred suggestions clearly derive from the discussion in the H.I. Bell volume quoted by LC above. So : "2. ? for συγχρηστιανοι fellow Christian, ib.17...

Re: The X-Files: Chrēstos / Christos / Χρειστος
Helena Blavatsky was all over it ... new terms such as Chréstianoï and Chréstodoulos “a follower or servant of Chrestos”—were coined out of the old material. This is shown by Philo Judæus, a monotheist, assuredly, using already the same term for monotheistic purposes. For he speaks of θεόχρηστος (t...

Re: It is impossible to escape from Marcionite priority
Could you please link me to data on point #7? I would really like to look into this. Lane I'm working from memory, and may not be able to pin down the actual source for this, but I believe (with no guarantee due to lingering uncertainty as to source, but not as to content) that it may be an early y...

Methodius uses the term But they are dragged down, being shaken out by the folds of the dragon, because they did not remain within the triangular forms of godliness, falling away from it with respect to an orthodox service ὀρθόδοξον Φρησκείαν this is c 300 CE and one feels the term should be found ...

Re: Manuscripts for Origenes Epistula ad Gregorium Thaumaturgum?
It depends what you are looking for. But J. Armitage Robinson, 'The Philocalia of Origen' (available on archive.org), is still worthwhile. As was the way then (1893), the introduction is very good on the physical and lexical peculiarities of individual manuscripts, demonstrates the logic of his stem...

Re: What's the Greek Equivalent to the Latin "Comes" Meaning Companion of a Bishop?
To clarify Stephen G.'s reply, the Greek equivalent to the Latin 'comes' is a straight loan word, κομης. This was a rank in the imperial civil service, bestowed by the emperor. This is the meaning in the examples Stephen cited. I can't immediately find any ecclesiastical use of κομης in the standard...

Re: Revisiting Philo's Therapeutae and their Context/Timeline
In January, 1938, A.D. Nock published an article by André-Jean Festugière on The Krater , an Hermetic symbol. Father Festugière (an anti-semite? anti-German?) dismissively references Edelstein's (German Jewish) friend and colleague's work, For the record : Gerschom Scholem writing to Morton Smith, ...

Re: Clement Against Bishop Hyginos?
. . . . . .שׁלמה . . . . . . / \ "Υγιαίνων" "Εἰρηναῖος" No, Clement is not giving Irenaeus a coded name-check here; the sentence becomes nonsensical. The analogy of healthy/diseased, applied to teaching/conduct/soul, is recurrent in Clement. In alluding to the Pastorals, (possib...
