Re: Paul’s Third Heaven Revisited

The proposed identification of a Coptic version of 2 (Slavonic) Enoch from Qasr Ibrim has been questioned:
“The Angel of Tartarus and the Supposed Coptic Fragments of 2 Enoch,” Böttrich, Christfried, Early Christianity, Volume 4, Number 4, December 2013, pp. 509-521(13).

Re: Irenaeus Thought Clement was a Heretic

The passage in
Irenaeus Adv Haer 3.2.1, "For [they allege] that the truth was not delivered by means of written documents, but viva voce,"
continues and, a few lines later, names Valentinus, Marcion, Cerinthus, and Basilides.

Re: Claim: Melito of Sardis' De Baptismo Discovered

Yes, apparently, an impressive find! In a comment on his blog he adds some tantalizing further information: "...the Coptic manuscript has ca. 16 pages. In addition to these, there are some previously neglected fragments in Greek."

Re: Top suspects that could have invented the historical Jes

Prof. Elior did correct herself after all these interviews. Perhaps worth considering: if a person is persuaded that X did not exist (perhaps not rare for some in this forum), X being Essenes in this case, one might not bother learning too much about X before promoting an alternative. A perhaps rela...

Re: Top suspects that could have invented the historical Jes

Apparently, Rachel Elior was not misrepresented by Haaretz and by the [London] Times. Consider also Time Magazine, March 16, 2009: "Elior, who teaches Jewish mysticism at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, claims that the Essenes were a fabrication by the 1st century A.D. Jewish-Roman historian Fla...

Re: Top suspects that could have invented the historical Jes

Prof. Rachel Elior as quoted in Haaretz, March 13, 2009: "Sixty years of research have been wasted trying to find the Essenes in the scrolls. But they didn't exist, they were invented by [Jewish-Roman historian] Josephus. It's a history of errors which is simply nonsense," she said. [http:...

Re: Hullabaloo over Coins from Qumran

To clarify, though I did not detail the contents of the Bruno Callegher article (available online--I do not know whether a subscription is required), I'll note that it includes documents and photographs. I find proposals that either several experts missed obvious identifications or conspired to cove...
