Re: Against Paul as the Name of the Apostle
Why does the author ask for this - I desire to hear from Marcion the origin of Paul the apostle. Either the Marcionites didn't know or they weren't saying. Tertullian is at this point pretending to be a new convert to Marcionism, and he is asking the kind of question he imagines a newcomer would as...

Re: Against Paul as the Name of the Apostle
But you are confounding the question of whether 'A' = 'B' or 'A' was unknown. The proper formula would be: since A's identity was made secret (and hence unknown to the world) he was associated with many different people. I am not sure what this is in response to. My most recent post was about Simon...

Re: Against Paul as the Name of the Apostle
Pseudo-Clementine Literature. Simon Magus clearly speaks as 'Paul.' Why would the author of the romance make this error unless once again the identity of the apostle was unknown or at least 'up for grabs'? Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.23.1: Simon the Samaritan was that magician of whom Luke, the di...

Re: Arguments concerning the Testimonium Taciteum.
The term Christianos may have originally been Chrestianos, with an e instead of an i. The significance of this has long been exaggerated by a certain range of infidel. First, if one took the time to familiarize oneself with the Beneventan script, it is obviously Chrestiani: 1. The script uses digra...

Re: Against Paul as the Name of the Apostle
Nothing is without an origin except God alone. .... In this section Tertullian accosts Marcion for accepting Paul as an apostle but rejecting other writings, ones which describe Paul and confirm his story. For example, he asserts that anybody can claim an apostleship for himself, as Paul does in Ga...

Re: Against Paul as the Name of the Apostle
I know there a lot of crazy theories about Paul out there (not to mention Jesus and others). But the idea that the apostle's name was different outside of the Catholic tradition isn't that 'out there.' Here is a preliminary list of reasons to doubt 'Paul.' 1. Tertullian Adversus Marcionem First Cha...

Re: The apocalyptic XVIth chapter of the Didache
I am not aware of the term being used to described, say, getting out of bed in the morning (which folks do again and again every day) or other short term periods of non-standing. ἀνάστασιν ... ἐξ ὕπνου : rise from sleep Sophocles, Philoctetes 276 Or as the opposite of falling: εἰς πτῶσιν καὶ ἀνάστα...

Re: Arguments concerning the Testimonium Taciteum.
The term Christianos may have originally been Chrestianos, with an e instead of an i. I'm pretty sure that's been confirmed. "With ultra-violet examination of the MS the alteration was conclusively shown. It is impossible today to say who altered the letter e into an i." J. Boman, Inpulso...

Re: Arguments concerning the Testimonium Taciteum.
There is also an issue around the veracity of the passage, and of Annals in toto - there is very little reference to them in Antiquity, if any at all. Tacitus appears to have become obscure already by the middle of century III. The Res Gestae of Ammianus Marcellinus have this to say about the emper...

Arguments concerning the Testimonium Taciteum.
I have been finding it difficult to juggle all the argumentation available regarding Tacitus' paragraph on Nero and the Christians, so I thought I would create a thread dedicated to collecting the various evidence. First, the passage itself. Tacitus, Annals 15.44 (translation modified slightly from ...
