Re: Unicode Greek Fathers

I tried to find something about this university. Their Mediterranean Studies web page has not been updated for almost 10 years: http://www.rhodes.aegean.gr/tms/index_eng.htm I would guess their funding has been cut back, since they are a state university. The person who was putting up the patristic ...

Thanks, Huon, I had seen that link. Unfortunately it only contains part of book 2.

soil shows James & Mary ossuaries authentic?

This geological researcher, Aryeh Shimron, says that soil traces on the notorious "James son of Joseph" ossuary line up with those from the Talpiot tomb, in which other ossuaries were found. One of those other ossuaries is of "Judah son of Jesus," and there is one of a Mary. He t...

Re: Text of Cyril of Alexandria Against Julian?

Hi David, thanks, I think I see how the site works now. Unfortunately, the material from the Contra Julianum is only the fragments, not the bulk of the work as printed in Migne. The fragments are searchable. Oh well. I'll try to cope with what's available so far.

Cheers, f

Re: Text of Cyril of Alexandria Against Julian?

Thanks for the link, David. I can't get anywhere with the links to the individual works, unfortunately. When you click on them, you only get a conspectus of what's in the TLG, not an actual text, as far as I can tell. The TLG doesn't have Cyril's Contra Iulianum because there is no recent text; it o...

Text of Cyril of Alexandria Against Julian?

Does anyone know of a recent text of Cyril of Alexandria's Against Julian ? Since 1998, a team, consisting of Christian Riedweg, Markus Vinzent, and five others, has been preparing a critical Greek text w/ transl and comm. for de Gruyter, but it's not out yet, as far as I know. Books 1-5 are due out...

bronze mask of Pan found in N. Israel

About a mile east of the Sea of Galilee, near the ancient city of Paneas, archaeologists using a metal detector dug up this bronze mask of the Greek god, Pan. They think it's in the spot where it lay 2000 yrs ago: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/24/pan-mask-israel_n_6925070.html?cps=gravity_26...

Re: translation problems

The JW interpretation really shouldn't work even for them, because it implies polytheism. Then you must not know the JWs very well. An analogy might be to compare them to Arians. Arians had no trouble imagining the Father god created a son "out of nothing" to serve a special function for ...

Re: translation problems

Yes, I questioned whether we should talk about "biblical Greek" as though the phrase designates, not simply the Greek idiom we find in the scriptures (LXX and NT), but also an identifiable and consciously stylized idiom. Granted, one can talk about semitisms and imitation semitisms. But do...

Re: translation problems

Found this on a Jehovah's Witness website about the anarthrous predicate noun in John 1:1. This website acknowledges the "qualitative" force of the predicate but goes on to draw the consequence that the predicate is indefinite, sc. the Word is "a god" or "godlike." How ...
