Re: Matthean posteriority: Mark's "Mary mother of Joses" vs "Mary mother of the James"

For the record, what precise wording in Acts 12:2 describes James Zebedee's early death for you, gryan? In Luke-Acts, "James and John" are identified as "the sons of Zebedee" only once (Lk 5:17). In the multiple subsequent mentions of "brothers" named "James"...

Re: Matthean posteriority: Mark's "Mary mother of Joses" vs "Mary mother of the James"

What other significant leader named James is there in Lk-Acts (or the NT) who is usually (or, to my knowledge always) identified in relation to his brother named John? It's immethodical to ask a question before answering first, 'And where do you see James Zebedee's early death described in Acts 12....

Re: Matthean posteriority: Mark's "Mary mother of Joses" vs "Mary mother of the James"

Well I think pretty clear the writer of Mark considered James Zebedee to be James the pillar. The three pillars are James, John and Peter... I know that is a widely held view (going back to Augustine's commentary on Galatians), but I have come to an alternative view. As I read Mark, the author knew...

Messianic Signs

Gospel accounts of phenomena were — as the case may be — not miracles, but deeds accomplished through natural processes. The phenomena as such were demonstrations of forces of nature, powers of which are to be borne out in discoveries by later generations. The given criteria is in line with the mess...

Re: Was "James the Lord's brother" Paul's thorn?

'James son of Zebedee was always identified in relation to his brother, John.' Not so. Superscriptions to the book of the Catholic Epistle of James has early editions initiated in the Syriac, Latin, Greek, Arabic,Coptic etc, identifying incontrovertibly the authorship to James son of Zebedee, the J...

Re: Was "James the Lord's brother" Paul's thorn?

Only one Mary is with Mary Magdalene observing where Jesus was laid, as depicted with, 'Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of Joses, were beholding where he was put',[Mark 15:47] and as depicted with, 'But Mary of Magdala was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the sepulchre',[Matthew 27:61].' Wh...

Re: Was "James the Lord's brother" Paul's thorn?

My reading of John reflects my prior reading of the Jameses of Mark and Galatians: Mark 15:47-16:1 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses (the natural mother of James the less/James the Lord's brother and of Jesus) saw where he was laid. When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the moth...
