Re: 3-Year Ministry Timeline of Jesus
Lena Einhorn in "A Shift in Time" points out that on a face-value reading of Matthew John the Baptist came preaching in the days when Jesus returned from Egypt . . . . 2.19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 Arise and ...

Re: Marcion and John the Baptist
Please stop talking about Antigonus. It's a stupid idea. Clearly the Marcionite gospel read 'John' - this has nothing to do with Antigonus. The jump from the name *John* to John Hyrcanus is far too big a jump to make on the basis of a name! And you think Antigonus is a stupid idea ..... :banghead:

Re: Marcion and John the Baptist
How do you get to Antigonus from John the Baptist when Antigonus was not named John? John the Baptist was, re the gospels, beheaded. Re Josephus, John was executed. John Hyrcanus was not executed. Put the two historical figures together into a composite figure - use the name of the elder - and you ...

Re: Marcion and John the Baptist
It would be great if we simply acknowledged that outside of recensions of texts preserved by the orthodox there is no evidence for the existence of "John the Baptist" near contemporary of Jesus. The Marcionite gospel is very important here. As Origen noyes the expectation of a resurrected...

Re: My review of Richard Carrier's "On the Historicity of Je
Out of interest, if h was defined as "lived in first half of the First Century" and "lived in Judea", what would ~h be? "Lived in first half of the First Century" and "NOT lived in Judea"? Now, that is an interesting question! Not simply in regard to Bayes th...

Re: Benny and the Jews
So every name used in 15:21 figures prominently in Josephus' wrap up Chapter 7 with a similar general setting of the destruction/predicted destruction of the Temple and themes of the Jews making the wrong choice. Thanks, Joe. In your estimation, was this Mark's little in-joke, and he did not care w...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Since the above chart is a very simplified version of my position on Simon the Cyrenean and his two sons - here is a better outline: maryhelena - posts 1 2 3 4 5 maryhelena on Simon the Cyrenean and his sons Alexander and Rufus: Mark 15:21. A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander a...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Chart from an earlier thread: Simon, from Cyrene. http://www.earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1274 The Simon, from Cyrene, story being a political allegory referencing Hasmonean history. Two sons executed by Rome. The father probably poisoned by those related to Pompey's army. Thus, J...

Re: My review of Richard Carrier's "On the Historicity of Je
Wells' theory is that Paul believed in a historical Jesus, but one that died a century or more before Paul wrote. By highlighting the century mark, you are leaning heavily into Alvar Ellegård, I believe. Wells himself — at least in his early, classic stuff (the stuff that influenced me in college) ...
