Re: Sinners of the land
I am trying to recall where I once read an argument that the Second Temple term "sinners" could well have referred to the "common people" as opposed to those of the literate or priestly and scribal classes. Has anyone else heard this argument and more importantly -- where/who ha...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Why is the name of the father mentioned first in Mark 10:46? Because Daddy Timaeus was known within the Markan community? Mark 10:46 ... ὁ υἱὸς Τιμαίου Βαρτιμαῖος, τυφλὸς προσαίτης, ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ... the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, blind beggar was sitting beside the way Why not going for t...

Re: The Greek Outline to Antiquities 18
Here is an example I pulled from Bibleworks and an online site at http://www.biblestudytools.com/history/flavius-josephus/antiquities-jews/ : JOS Antiquities of the Jews 1 [/b] Book 1: [/b] . From The Creation To The Death Of Isaac (3,833 Years) Προοίμιον περὶ τῆς ὅλης πραγματείας . Τάδε ἔνεστιν ἐν ...

Re: The Greek Outline to Antiquities 18
I ultimately come down in favor of seeing the summaries (and any 'omissions') as useless to establishing anything about the absence of anything in the Antiquties' text, and I think that does hold... unless and until someone could show that they are not authorial and also not Jewish but rather Chris...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
My first Bible (the NAB), with fairly mainstream critical notes, did gloss here: http://www.usccb.org/bible/mk/15:21#49015021-1 The precise naming of Simon and his sons is probably due to their being known among early Christian believers to whom Mark addressed his gospel . Hmmm ... There is somethi...

Re: Essenes always held Passover on Wednesday?
I'm not sure I follow your Julian date for the 1 Nisan that fell in 30 CE. Parker & Dubberstein (1956) calculate a new moon for this month on or before March 25. Their reconstruction of the Babylonian calendar uses their interpretation of the standard 19yr intercalation cycle that is supposedly...

Re: Essenes always held Passover on Wednesday?
In order to keep feasts on the same day of the week, intercalation must occur in multiples of seven days. A simple crude solution is to add an extra week every six years. The Vermes quote I gave above suggesting 30CE as a good time for the virtual crucifixion because of the full moon on April 8th -...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2.13-16, Paul, and the gospel of Matthew
I too must search again to make sure I had my translation right, that is Eusebius comment on Hegesippus about the death of James the Just and the Door to Jesus. John T, It is definitely "door of Jesus" due to the case of the Greek words του Ιησου. They are in the Genitive case which signi...

Re: Hegesippus on James the Just
They would be variations of the same, or similar, Hebrew or Aramaic name, I'd think. But that is not enough to equate two specific folks.MrMacSon wrote:Are the names Ananus and Ananias interchangeable?
