Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

Nevertheless your argument appears to be 100% an argument from silence that is constructed by various outside sources that may or may not have influenced him. from the only fact that Jesus came from Nazaret surely you can infer his physical birth. But even so it is redundant by Mark to add the Bapt...

Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

but the words "you are my Son" are spoken by any mother or father only the first time there is a recognition of the his/her son and this first time can only be the time of a birth ( beyond if spiritual or physical). Those words can be spoken as simply a statement as fact. If you think the...

Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

Once you concede me the point that the baptism episode in Mark allegorizes already a birth (even if only a spiritual birth), then you can't deny that Mark knew the story of a "birth" for Jesus. I don't concede that Mark thought of the baptism as a birth. The very fact that he has Jesus ex...

Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

I don't know where you are going with all of this. Mark's physical Jesus existed before the baptism. Luke and Matthew IMO simply explained the events surrounding the physical birth of that physical Jesus that Mark wrote about

Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

Where are you getting the idea that the baptism is a 'second birth'? Nor from Mark. So you can't make that claim without acknowledging that it is a theory without supporting evidence from Mark, it appears to me. I do not agree that there is a'at least a sense of a birth of Jesus for Mark'. That is a...

Re: Did Mark know the story of the birth of Jesus?

Where are you getting the idea that Mark saw the baptism as a birth? It doesn't say "You just were born as my son". It says "You are my son." Before that it says he 'came from Nazareth in Galilee'. So, obviously he had to be born physically prior to the baptism. The idea that Jes...

Re: A suggestion regarding the beloved disciple.

Good points Ben. Thanks. See, I think that John was written with (an)other gospel account(s) in mind. First, after reporting in 3.22 the baptisms that Jesus was effecting along with his disciples in Judea, and then mentioning in 3.23 that John the baptist was simultaneously baptizing in Aenon near S...

Re: A suggestion regarding the beloved disciple.

Wow, 24:12 - for some reason that wasn't in my memory at all. Interesting. Scales are tipping... RE who the beloved is - I'm going to have to pass. I know that's the tradition but don't know how strong the support is for that. I find it to be a strange phrase "the disciple whom Jesus loved"...

Re: A suggestion regarding the beloved disciple.

Ted, would you agree that, if this disciple really did the things attributed to him in the fourth canonical gospel, then the other evangelists (or let us say mainly Mark) did some work to write him out of things? For example, Mark says that all of Jesus' followers fled, and then has only women at t...

Re: A suggestion regarding the beloved disciple.

I have given much thought to these references to the beloved disciple over the years, and would like to make a somewhat simple suggestion concerning him. Two ideas stand in conflict for me. First, most if not all of the references feel so very artificial; it is as if somebody read Mark and perhaps ...
