Re: Bart Ehrman's new book: Jesus Before the Gospels

on the contrary it demonstrates how fragile the ground is upon which the historicist case is based. Jesus died in about the year 30 CE, but our earliest surviving accounts of his life did not start to appear until some forty years later (beginning with the Gospel of Mark). my bolding Issues with th...

How could there be memories that somebody did *not* exist? Answer courtesy of Andrew Criddle: http://bcharchive.org/2/thearchives/showthreadf72b-2.html?t=272430&page=5 Lucian: A True Story http://www.sacred-texts.com/cla/luc/true/tru02.htm book 2, page 318. καὶ γὰρ τοῦτον παρ᾿ αὐτοῖς ἐθεασάμην,

Re: Bart Ehrman's new book: Jesus Before the Gospels

Homer is often considered to be a mythical figure One might assume, that, having scolded me, for "preaching", and arguing "without evidence", you would provide a link to those unnamed, mysterious figures of history who regard Homer as a "mythical figure". As far as I a...

Re: Bart Ehrman's new book: Jesus Before the Gospels

This still doesn't mean we can be certain that Jesus the man was invented. Maybe, maybe not. Are there any figures of literature, where the character, as elaborated in the text, satisfies your criteria for "fictional--not human"? How about Chichikov, for example? Are you uncertain whether...

Re: Bart Ehrman's new book: Jesus Before the Gospels

What Ehrman is doing here is called "picking your battles". Hardly anyone would touch his books if he just stood up and told us "we cannot know anything with certainty". I am not claiming that "we cannot know anything with certainty". I am arguing, contrarily, that we ...

Re: Bart Ehrman's new book: Jesus Before the Gospels

I think Ehrman is a more critical, and perhaps more radical scholar in some ways than he gets credit for from mythicists. Would you award "credit" to someone who commenced writing about a person, providing an exact date of death, without having a credible source to acknowledge that date, ...

Re: Justin's "which are called Gospels": interpolation?

Without meaning to be rude, I have no idea what you're talking about here. I too, wish not to appear rude. I wonder if perhaps you are not following Ulan's prescient comment, because you are looking at the English word, "gospel", instead of looking at the Greek text, which could indicate ...

Re: Justin's "which are called Gospels": interpolation?

Justin Martyr directly equated his "memoirs of the apostles" with the Gospels, however some critics believe that clause to be an interpolation. I assume most would accept that the gospel of Mark existed in its final form by the time Justin wrote, and Justin certainly quotes Mark's gospel ...

Re: Oh, no! Not another thread about Richard Carrier!

Basically, each Element is a proposition that his overall thesis will assume in order to arrive at a conclusion. The Oxford English dictionary provides three definitions. In view of Carrier's predisposition to fashion his writing in terms of Mathematical principles, however, it seems reasonable to ...
