Re: The Twelve Disciples created by the Jerusalem Church

In AGAINST HERESIES, Book 2, Ch, 20, and following, Irenaeus is arguing quite strongly against the Synoptic gospels' chronology which was the troublesome aspect of the Synoptics, as he saw it. John's gospel, on the other hand, has ca. 3 1/2 years ministry which seemed far superior to him. Irenaeus d...

Bartholomew

Bartholomew is mentioned in Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14, and in Acts 1:13. According to Catholic Encyclopedia (Bartholomew), The name (Bartholomaios) means "son of Talmai" (or Tholmai) which was an ancient Hebrew name. It shows, at least, that Bartholomew was of Hebrew descent; it m...

Nathanael

Nathanael is mentioned only in gJohn 1:45. According to Catholic Encyclopedia (Nathanael), It is generally held that Nathanael is to be identified with the Apostle Bartholomew of the Synoptic writers. The latter make no mention of Nathanael, but in their lists of the Twelve, one, Bartholomew, is alw...

James, the son of Alpheus

James, the son of Alpheus, James the Less -- Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13. According to Catholic Encyclopedia (James the Less), There is, at any rate, very good ground (Galatians 1:19, 2:9, 2:12) for believing that the Apostle James, the son of Alpheus is the same person as James, t...

They created these animal skins to be written on asap after making the skin ready for writing. They did not sit on shelves waiting to be written on. They were for the most part created to be used for a specific task. This was expensive material, not to be confused with paper on a shelf waiting to b...

Re: How many Christians ?

Some primitive communities were believed to have been founded by the immediate followers of Christ, the apostles. They were called "apostolic churches," and entitled to especial respect. Until the fifth or sixth century the Roman Church was just one of these "apostolic" churches....

Thanks for all of this! But wasn't the Bishop of Rome considered throughout history (Catholic at least) to be the Pope?
Pope is the title of an ordinary priest in the oriental churches.

Where am I going ?

I am looking for the early history of the christians. I think that they were in a significant number in the great towns of the roman empire around 100 CE. There are IMO at least two possible researchs, the description of the persecutions, and secondly, the lists of the early bishops of Rome, Alexand...
