Re: Pilate and Josephus
A gospel story about Jesus crucified under Pilate. Whether the Jesus figure is historical or literary the gospel So you think that there is reason to doubt that Jesus was understood to have lived at the time of Pilate. I see the exact opposite. I think the evidence says ALL CHRISTIANS thought Jesus...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
But surely the question is 'how do we know what we know (or 'think we know' )? I don't see you dealing with any of this EVER. How can you claim to have superior knowledge to the inherited tradition when you don't demonstrate anywhere that you understand why they believe what they believe how the tru...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
You can't argue for or against the existence of Jesus AND AT THE SAME TIME the date the gospel was set. These are two separate issues. The gospel could be fiction and set in a particular year. It's almost as if you want to distract yourself from the work that needs to get done and back to issues you...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
Variations that cannot be harmonized by assuming a historical Jesus. I was reading through your post and was thinking to myself 'how thoughtful' and then this sentence came up. Why does the question of Jesus's historicity have to creep in to a discussion of first principles? This is exactly what I ...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
Hoehner notes: As mentioned above, Justin Martyr's remark that Pilate, Herod, and the Jews met together against Jesus3 is similar to that of Acts 4: 27 in that he is trying to see every aspect of Psalm 2 fulfilled in the trial of Jesus. This would be true as well for Tertullian,4 and the same can be...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
Of course it is difficult to understand how Irenaeus could have used Josephus and understood Pilate was still alive during the reign of Claudius. But look at Irenaeus: For Herod the king of the Jews and Pontius Pilate, the governor of Claudius Caesar, came together and condemned Him to be crucified....

Re: Pilate and Josephus
The question is methodology. Scholarship looks at the inherited material from antiquity and says the synoptics are probably correct. But they aren't examining with any critical acumen how we arrived at this package. They're noticing that the synoptics say one thing and John another and siding with t...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
I hazard to guess what your position is but since you won't articulate it openly I suspect your point is that because Luke is a problem we are free to adopt any belief about the historicity of Jesus. I don't think that's necessarily the best way to proceed. I think we are better off contextualizing ...

Re: Pilate and Josephus
I've used Irenaeus and Irenaeus's reporting about Luke and gospels to say 'hey Luke is a questionable source' what is your opinion on the matter? Is Luke a good source? Why is Luke a believable source?
