Re: Boink the Step-Mother? – Look Out Below (1 Cor 5:5)

It is such an intriguing passage. What do you think Paul means with "the destruction of the flesh"? I have a theory concerning this passage, a very speculative one, that what we have is a witness to a harsh cleansing ritual of some sorts in the early communities: He was to be sent into sol...

Re: Is the lack of demons in OT unusual?

The OT is sort of against magic, but that seems mostly because the writers seem to think it works. The article below is an interesting semi-related discussion of Rabbinics on this issue. Re: Is the lack of demons in OT unusual?

Stefan, Let's not import too much of our own worldview when interpreting theirs. Mainly the Jewish scriptures speak of angels who have some powers on the authority of the one (God) who sends them. It speaks very little about how physical changes (weather, illnesses, etc.) occur. While the pagan wor...

Re: Is the lack of demons in OT unusual?

Thanks. So it seems that in the world of the OT there are the spirits of the dead who can be summoned, and in Is 8:19 these seem to be equated with "gods". And there are some kind of forces that can be wielded with sorcery(?), and there are all the heavenly beings with God (angels and othe...

Re: Is the lack of demons in OT unusual?

I'm not sure how this interesting question rates on a Richter scale measuring unusuality. Generally speaking, Jewish theology doesn't blames the victim of possession and/or disease or disability. Although, I have heard chachams ( http://www.jewish-languages.org/jewish-english-lexicon/words/1375 )- ...

Is the lack of demons in OT unusual?

In the OT desease and sin is only extremely rarely spoken of in terms of evil forces such as demons or spirits. Isn't it true that practically every other religion had the idea of evil spirits, demons, divine beings, etc. populating the world and existing everywhere around us? Where are all those hu...

Re: "Eli eli" at the ninth hour is a prayer? (Mark 15:34)

The Didache also teaches that the Christians must pray three times a day, Did 8:3: "Three times a day pray like this". With reference to the Lord's Prayer.

Re: "Eli eli" at the ninth hour is a prayer? (Mark 15:34)

Origen makes a connection with the parable of the vineyard with the 11th hour = the resurrection Interesting, thanks. Do you remember where? (And please don't call people idiots, that's not very nice at all!) Possibly http://www.lectionarycentral.com/septuag/Origen.html I think this is from the com...

Re: "Eli eli" at the ninth hour is a prayer? (Mark 15:34)

Maybe so. Samson seems to be a version of the Heracles myth. But the question is, did the Christians recognize the 'universality' of these stories in Scripture and so endowed them with extra meaning from the other versions they might have recognized, or did they only understand and interpret them w...

Re: "Eli eli" at the ninth hour is a prayer? (Mark 15:34)

Thanks. I think there are lots questions that Goodacre answers way too quicly or not at all in this paper, such as what exactly Paul means by "proclaiming" the death of Christ when eating the Lord's supper. If I understand him correctly (but I've only read this one paper, of course) then ...
