Re: Epiphanius believed the Didascalia to be truly Apostolic

Let me make a suggestion: pull together the research and citations to argue that the Odes should be in the Ebionaen Canon , and submit it to the thread. I've seen enough to support that to add it into the apocrypha. Then let's us look at them in relation to the Didache and the Clementines. Well, th...

Re: Epiphanius believed the Didascalia to be truly Apostolic

I'm afraid that the Didache, even if it is as super-early as I think it is, *still* is downstream of Paul. The Lord's prayer, as quoted, is from canonical Matthew, which in turn is derived from Mark, which in turn was based on Paul. Sure the Didache is layered, and surely preserves even pre-christi...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

i won't disagree with any of that and yet those facts kind of help the theory of a mystic prophet. This not what the epistles or gospels advertise him to be, so if they were based on one then there's a bit of a disconnect going on. Is it possible to imagine a group becoming so diverse and split it n...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

So not only is Paul an unreliable witness to begin with, who cannot really affirm the actual existence of any real person even under the best of conditions, what we have in our hands is evidence that has been higher tampered with in ways that were intended to make it appear as though a Jesus who wa...

Re: Epiphanius believed the Didascalia to be truly Apostolic

(That's not a screed - it's ecclessiastical literature :-,) It's sort of an interesting one: it was the basis for what was later called the Apostolic Consitutions, which Whiston translated . Epiphanius believed the Didascalia to be truly Apostolic. If so, it would explain it completely omitting the...

Re: Do the 7 letters in Rev. line up with the Apostolicon?

And we chose and appointed Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, notable men among the brethren, 23and wrote by them as followeth : --The apostles and elders and brethren to the brethren who are of the gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting. 24Forasmuch as we have heard that some...

Re: What is in Jesus from Outer Space that is not in OHJ

meh, Q is speculative, hypothetical and contrived. Dunn is, assuming, albeit like nearly everyone in the field, that there were, in the mid first century, "a coherent...complex of traditions" about a figure as we have in the Gospels. Maybe the problem was the traditions and there needed t...

Re: Paul's letters all derived from Marcion?

Proxy baptism sounds cultish and like what would emerge from a cult! http://earlychristianwritings.com/text/didascalia.html the above is an interesting one. massive screed completely omitting Paul or anything Pauline. One might think the Epistles never existed or were used by the heretics it mention...

Re: What is in Jesus from Outer Space that is not in OHJ

This does, of course, still leave us with the larger question of why Paul showed so little interest in Jesus’s teachings generally ; but, again, we’re up against the problem that mythicism doesn’t explain that either. Even according to the mythicist hypothesis, Paul would have believed that Jesus e...

Re: What is in Jesus from Outer Space that is not in OHJ

But let’s focus on this common fallacy of assuming prior Apostles means Disciples. Is there any evidence in Paul that “those guys get authority from having known the historical Jesus”? No. To the contrary, that conundrum is conspicuously absent from the letters of Paul: that they knew Jesus and he ...
