Re: Is anyone here good at Hebrew?
Also even 10-10 sounds weird if it refers to YHVH... "pursued and harrassed" isn't really the big guy's style. If the verbs are singular, there isn't really any other way to read it. Margalit (p. 475) notes that some of the same wording is used in the Exodus story, where Yahweh himself fi...

Re: Is anyone here good at Hebrew?
The Jerusalem Bible also translates it as follows: Yahweh drove them headlong before Israel, defeating them completely at Gibeon; furthermore, he pursued them towards the descent of Beth-horon and harassed them as far as Azekah, and as far as Makkedah. Clearly, the JB translators thought Yahweh was ...

Re: Is anyone here good at Hebrew?
It seems to me that in this verse, it is Yahweh himself who defeats the armies attacking Gibeon and chases them all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. Most English translations seem to fudge this, since it clashes a bit with the lead-up in verse 9. I just wanted to confirm if I understand it correctly.

Re: Is the Rejection of Jewish Origin for Xristianity = Lazi
One serious problem would be, why doesn't Ben Sira know about Ezra when he lists all the heroes of the Bible and Israelite history in 180 CE?

Re: Is the Rejection of Jewish Origin for Xristianity = Lazi
The story of Ezra, like that of Josiah, is a fictional attempt to provide a historical pedigree for the Torah and explain why none of the ancient Israelites knew about it (since it kept getting "lost" and rediscovered, supposedly). It was a nationalistic (Hellenistic) story placed in a nar...

Re: Is the Rejection of Jewish Origin for Xristianity = Lazi
I go with Garbini's theory that Ezra is a fictional character. (Nehemiah was historical, on the other hand.)

Re: Is the Rejection of Jewish Origin for Xristianity = Lazi
What if Moses originated simply as the fictional eponymous ancestor of the Mushites? This would have been some kind of early priestly caste associated with the Jerusalem temple and perhaps other sanctuaries (Gerizim?). It might have been responsible for whatever rituals focused on the Nehushtan. It ...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 8.3 (offering forth).
All good points. It's easy to see why Wells, Mack, and other unconventional scholars want to create some distance between the hellenistic Christ cults and whatever movements may have been devoted to a more human Jesus figure. You may well be right that the fixation with Pilate in later creeds and wr...

Re: A lengthy note on Hebrews 8.3 (offering forth).
Great series of posts. As an aside, it strikes me as astonishing that the author never correlates any of his theology or symbolism with any concrete fact regarding the historical circumstances of Jesus' death. If the author thinks Jesus was killed by some collusion between the Jewish leaders, Romans...
